At MSD, where we prioritize employee growth and development, opportunities for career advancement frequently originate from within the organization. As part of our commitment to nurturing talent, we consistently welcome interns into our ranks through the Early Talent Program. Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with Petr Jankuj, who commenced his journey with us as an intern and has since ascended the career ladder to reach the position of a Level-Three Manager. He shares his insights into the company's culture, values, and the path he's taken to achieve professional success.
What aspects of the MSD company's culture and values initially attracted you to join, and how have those aspects continued to motivate and guide you throughout your journey from intern to level-three manager?
My passion for fields such as chemistry and physics has always driven me to find purpose in my work. I was initially drawn to MSD because of our shared values, especially the commitment to saving and enhancing lives. This mission resonated with me on a personal level, and it continues to be a driving force in my career. Being part of a company dedicated to improving lives and becoming a leading biopharmaceutical research firm has given my work a profound sense of purpose. Moreover, the people at MSD embody these values in their daily actions, fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment that has enabled my growth. It's this supportive atmosphere that truly distinguishes MSD and has enabled me to thrive.
As someone who has experienced various levels within the organization, what advice would you give to newer employees who aspire to climb the corporate ladder and achieve similar career growth?
I would advise them to adopt a "work hard, play hard" mindset. Instead of solely focusing on job levels, concentrate on the value you bring to the company. Your dedication and contributions will naturally lead to career growth.
Can you describe the most significant challenge you faced during your journey from being an intern to a level-three manager, and how did you overcome it?
Joining a well-established multinational company presented challenges, especially in terms of teamwork, communication, and alignment with colleagues. Recognizing the importance of these aspects was crucial for personal and project success. Embracing these values required continuous learning and adaptation, particularly in the face of change. Understanding MSD's values and cultural diversity was essential for success, as sharing insights across boundaries is a fundamental practice here.
What key skills or experiences from your early days at the company do you believe have been crucial to your success as a level-three manager today?
Effective communication has been fundamental, enabling clear idea conveyance, seamless collaboration, and effective team leadership. Adaptability has allowed me to thrive in our dynamic corporate environment, embracing change with agility. Problem-solving is another skill I've carried forward, helping me tackle complex challenges, analyze issues, and make informed decisions.
How would you advise an intern considering an internship at MSD?
An internship at a company like MSD, with a rich history of scientific research, is a fantastic opportunity for learning and growth. Dive into a world of groundbreaking discoveries and innovation. Take the time to understand the company's goals and values, aligning them with your own ambitions. Working in a multinational company means learning from diverse teams, and contributing to personal and professional growth. It's not just a job; it's a chance to make a difference in people's lives worldwide through science. Focus on the values you can contribute to the company, and remember that it's a two-way journey of growth.
