From Industry Authority to Global Force: The Trusted Advisor's Journey

In 2001, I walked into a Birmingham Junior Chamber of Commerce leadership seminar to find just six people in attendance. The energy was flat, the potential untapped.

The choice was clear: I walk away or help transform it. I chose transformation.

What happened next would teach me the most valuable lesson about leadership and influence: the power of intentional network building.

Within months, we grew from those six people to regular gatherings of 15, then 25, then consistently pulling 45-75 leaders weekly. By 2003, we were hosting the Annual JCI European Conference with 1,200 attendees from across the continent. The catalyst wasn't just better marketing or more engaging content — it was the deliberate construction of a trusted advisor network.

The Hidden Challenge of Success

If you're reading this, you've likely achieved significant success. You're respected in your industry, possibly sitting on multiple boards, and recognised as a voice of authority. But here's what many won't admit:

When done correctly, you'll notice almost immediate changes. The most visible sign? High-value referrals and opportunities start flowing to you with far less effort. In time you are the one who’s invited to high-visibility events by global influencers.

Really enjoyed reading that. How does this mirror my journey....I started and led the Bangladeshi Youth Forum in 1994 with a handful of people that soon became a movement that Harun Rabbani and many others were part of. I didn't stop there, I developed my own leadership model called "delegated leadership" this was about mentoring bright young people and preparing them to become major players in the city. If I do nothing else, I can proudly say that I've supported people who have transformed the landscape in Birmingham, UK and globally. Now the question for me is how I package that and continue....I'm sure Harun Rabbani will have some ideas.
