From Hidden to Hero: Empowering Latinas Through Visibility

I spent the majority of my life hiding in plain sight—hiding my hand, my disability. I also wore a full back brace because of severe scoliosis till the 7th grade when I had surgery. It took me years to even call myself disabled because I feared the stigma attached.

Now, imagine carrying the weight of feeling different. Picture the stares, the whispers, and the feeling of not fitting in. It’s enough to make anyone want to disappear. Can you feel it? The urge to hide, to disconnect, to protect yourself from the world?

What if people only saw your flaws? For years, I lived with that thought. I avoided photographs unless they captured my 'good side.'

On top of that, I grew up feeling like I existed between two worlds, "ni de aquí, ni de allá"—not from here, not from there. Growing up with my Mexican mom and American Stepdad and being the only sibling from my mom's first marriage, I sometimes felt like an outlier in my own family.

Does this resonate with you? Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong or that being seen was a risk? If so, you’re not alone.

Stepping into the workplace as a first-generation professional, I used silence as a strategy, staying small, seeking approval, and feeling like an impostor at every turn. The fear of visibility kept me from advocating for myself. But everything changed in 2014 when I took a leap of faith and joined a coach training program.

That decision shifted my entire perspective. I realized that my differences weren't weaknesses; they were my superpowers. I began to release the shame and embrace who I truly am. With a ton of inner work, I started leading workshops, speaking at events, and stepping into leadership roles. I found that my confidence soared as I connected with others and embraced my gifts of writing, teaching, and speaking.

Why Visibility Matters

Visibility is crucial for us as Latinas and other marginalized groups. When we increase our visibility, we challenge stereotypes and break down barriers. We become role models, showing younger generations that they can belong and succeed. Our stories are powerful tools for change. By sharing them, we help others see themselves in places they might not have imagined.

Join the 5-Day Visibility Challenge

Your experience profoundly resonates with me, as I have also spent much of my life navigating the complexities of living with a disability. I understand the weight of feeling different and the instinct to hide to protect oneself from judgment and misunderstanding. I felt like such a burden to employers , like I was forcing them to "accommodate my disability".
