From Hate to Heroism: The Changing Narrative Around Black Players in the Euros
As England’s national team shines in the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany, a remarkable transformation is unfolding. Black players like Jude Bellingham, Ivan Tony and Bukayo Saka are not just contributing to the team's success; they are being celebrated and hailed as heroes by fans across the nation.
This is a stark contrast to the aftermath of the Euro 2020 final, when some of these same players faced horrendous racial abuse following missed penalties. The outpouring of hate they received then revealed the ugly underbelly of conditional support—where cheers quickly turned to jeers the moment they were perceived to have failed.
However, the current tournament tells a different story. The narrative is shifting with every goal, assist, and outstanding performance. The same players who were once the targets of vile abuse are now the focal points of our national pride. The adulation they are receiving speaks volumes about their resilience and the power of excellence to transcend prejudice.
In a previous post, I discussed the issue of over-objectification of Black players, noting that many fans cheer for these athletes only when they perform well, overlooking their racist thoughts because of the immediate benefit the players bring. This superficial support does not equate to true respect or the eradication of deep-seated racism.
Yet, it’s essential to recognize that this shift should not be merely about their performance on the pitch. How we celebrate their success must reflect a deeper, more meaningful change in our societal attitudes toward race. These athletes are more than their athletic achievements—they are individuals deserving of respect and dignity, irrespective of their contribution to a football match.

As we approach the final on Sunday, my hope is that no matter the result—whether England wins or loses—we stay together as a country and do not revert to the old ways of conditional support and latent racism. True progress will be measured not just by how we cheer in times of victory but by how we support and stand by our players, and each other, in moments of adversity.
Let this tournament be a catalyst for lasting change, fostering a society where every individual is valued and respected, always. Let's continue to champion equality and unity, ensuring that our support for these players is unwavering and genuine.
Come on England Its coming home !!!!
