From hands-on mining to high-impact projects: Nyasha Gwatimba
We chat to 29Metals Principal Mining Engineer, Nyasha Gwatimba...
Q: Can you share a bit about your career journey and what led you to your current role? A: I began my career as a Mining Engineer after completing two years of underground experience. Over time, I’ve had the chance to work both in operations and in technical services across various roles, from Underground Manager to Technical Services Superintendent. I’ve also had the opportunity to work internationally in Africa and India, which has broadened my perspective and enriched my experience.
Q: What do you like about working at 29Metals? A: I appreciate the company culture and the fact that 29Metals is a smaller company, allowing me to interact with senior leadership and management teams. It’s not a top-down management structure, which makes my work fulfilling as all ideas are genuinely considered. Plus, I've had the chance to work alongside incredibly talented people in management, finance, operations, processing and HSEC, which has contributed to my growth. I also benefit from a flexible work arrangement, including working from home on certain days.
Q: What has been the most rewarding project or achievement you've experienced at the company? A: Working on the Gossan Valley Project is a particularly rewarding experience.
Q: How have you developed your skills since joining the company? A: I’ve enhanced my skills by attending webinars, professional events and taking courses focused on professional development.
Q: What opportunities for professional growth have been most beneficial to you here? A: Working closely with the Group Manager of Planning and Analysis has deepened my understanding of the business side of 29Metals. This experience motivated me to attend professional events and pursue development courses related to business.

Q: Can you describe a training experience that impacted your career significantly? A: Early in my career, I was fortunate to have an incredible mentor who went above and beyond to ensure I became a well-rounded Mining Engineer. That mentorship has influenced my approach; I now prioritise mentoring where I can to help others grow and learn as much as possible.
Q: What’s one value of the company culture that resonates most with you, and why? A: Mutual Respect. I believe that when we treat others with dignity, value their contributions and embrace tolerance, we create a positive work environment. It’s vital, as we spend such a large part of our lives at work.
Q: What advice would you give to someone new joining 29Metals/Golden Grove? A: Golden Grove offers unique challenges and learning experiences, like working at depth and managing seismicity. Our team is diverse, so you’re bound to learn something new every week.
Q: What are you most excited about for your future career and the company? A: I’m looking forward to seeing Gossan Valley’s first ore, of course! With a new mine, we aim to avoid common pitfalls and maintain high technical standards, which should make meeting operational targets more manageable.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work? A: I enjoy playing chess and solving mathematical puzzles. They remind me that every work challenge has a solution.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’ve been given that’s stuck with you? A: “Experience is not how much you’ve seen but how wisely you’ve seen it.”
