As we reflect on 2024 we want to remind you
Our Mission is Simple
At Global Rights Defenders (GRD), our mission is simple. We strive to create an inclusive society for all. Where displaced populations can be safely protected in their host countries and be shielded from discrimination during their fight for a fair and just life.
We are driven by our purpose to empower displaced populations to achieve socio-economic independence and self-reliance and to build their capacities to ensure their rights, freedoms and dignities are being upheld and valued.
With more than 120 million people currently facing displacement and less than 50% of asylum countries allowing refugees to work, hundreds of thousands of people are increasingly dependent on their host countries for basic support such as food, shelter and clothing. Support of which is increasingly unreliable, inconsistent and scarce. But that’s where GRD steps in.
Working one-on-one with Refugee Led Organizations (RLO) on the ground, we develop evidence-based research to inform programming, raise the voices of refugees to help them tell their story and advocate for systemic changes to give them the capacity needed to be self-reliant and accepted in their host countries.
In the last 12 months we were a big part of our community
Experience A Day in the Life at GRD
→ We mentored youth activists for the World Economic Forum, Davos
→ We Lectured at Universities about the importance of Migration Governance (Global Campus of Human Rights, University of British Columbia)
→ We participated in online panel events (Carleton University, Migration Summit)
→ We partnered with Human Rights Organizations to further the agenda of equity & SDG 17(Global Human Rights Defence, Voice for Rights International)
→ We submitted reports to the Human Rights Council with our partner GHRD
→ We supported a refugee-led podcast on the issues of higher education (Connected Learning in Crisis Consortium)
→ and so much more <3
In the last 12 months we impacted a lot of lives
Experience the projects at Global Rights Defenders with us
→ We created and facilitated our first capacity building activity on project management with refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp, where we trained 27 refugee leaders from 22 refugee-led organisations
→ We continued our training and hosted our program online where we facilitated our program to more than 50 refugees
→ Our blogs have reached audiences of over 6000+ people!
→ and so much more <3

Specifically, we focus on refugees, refugee rights, and campaign for the protection and promotion of displaced persons.
