From Goal-Setting to Goal-Getting: The Key is in the System

From Goal-Setting to Goal-Getting: The Key is in the System

Setting goals is easy, but turning them into reality? That's where the challenge lies.

While big changes sound appealing, it’s the small, consistent actions we take daily that lead to meaningful transformation. Imagine a 1% improvement each day—much like compound interest, these small efforts build up over time, creating significant results.?

If you've set a goal but aren’t seeing progress, it's time to focus on the system. James Clear, in his book Atomic Habits, posed an intriguing question: "If you ignored your goals and focused solely on your system, would you still succeed?" His answer? Absolutely. Just as a basketball team that masters its daily practice can win championships, you too can achieve your goals by sticking to a well-designed system.?

Why does this work? Because obsessing over the end result often overwhelms us, slowing our progress. Instead, if you focus on the process— writing each day, exercising regularly, or taking one step at a time—you will eventually get there without fixating on the outcome.

Another common trap is mistaking motion for action. We often prepare to take action by reading books, downloading apps, buying the equipment, or doing endless research, all while avoiding the real work. It's comforting, but it’s not progress. Real progress comes from doing—consistently showing up and putting in the reps.?

Studies show it takes around 80 days of repetition to form a habit, a process called automaticity, where the action becomes second nature. So, whether you’re trying to write a book, become healthier, or learn a new skill, commit to your system daily. Over time, you’ll cross that invisible line where your desired behaviours become automatic, and that's when real change happens.

Remember: Goals set the direction, but systems drive progress.
