From GIVER to IMPACT Maker – How to Expand Your Reach and Build a Lasting Legacy

By Jake Talbert, Author and Founder of The GIVER Method

Many purpose-driven individuals start their journey by helping people on a personal level—mentoring, coaching, supporting, or advising one-on-one. This is the foundation of meaningful impact, but at some point, a question emerges: What if my work could extend beyond the people I personally help? What if I could build something that continues to grow, long after I'm gone?

This is the shift from being a GIVER—someone who creates personal impact—to becoming an IMPACT Maker—someone who builds systems, movements, and communities that sustain and multiply their influence.

If you’ve ever felt a calling to create something bigger, but you’re not sure how to expand your reach, this is for you. Here are seven steps to move from helping individuals to building long-term, scalable change.

1. Expand Your Vision Beyond One-on-One Giving

Personal giving is powerful, but visionary leadership requires a broader perspective. Instead of constantly responding to individual needs, IMPACT Makers identify patterns and create solutions that address systemic challenges.

This means looking at recurring struggles people face and asking: How can I build something that solves this at scale? It’s the difference between coaching a handful of entrepreneurs and creating a structured training program that equips thousands with the same tools for success.

How to Take Action

Start by keeping a Pattern Recognition Journal for two weeks. Every time you help someone, document the challenge they were facing, how you assisted them, and what the outcome was. Then, analyze these notes to identify patterns. Are you consistently helping people with the same types of challenges? Are there gaps in existing systems that you could address with a broader solution?

Use these insights to create a Scalability Plan—a roadmap that outlines how you can turn individual solutions into structured programs, mentorship networks, or repeatable processes that serve many.

2. Create Systems That Allow Your Impact to Scale

Your time is finite, but systems are not. One of the most effective ways to grow your impact is by structuring your work in a way that others can learn from and replicate.

Instead of giving one-on-one guidance, consider how you can package your expertise into repeatable frameworks—workshops, online courses, playbooks, or mentorship programs.

How to Take Action

Document your Gift Delivery Process—write down the exact steps you take when helping someone. Then, ask yourself: How can I turn this into a structured format? Could you create a training program? A step-by-step guide? A mentorship system? Start by testing your process with a small group, refine it, and then scale.

3. Multiply Your Impact Through Mentorship and Movement Building

A true IMPACT Maker doesn’t just give—they teach others to give, too. The fastest way to multiply your influence is by mentoring people who can carry your mission forward.

How to Take Action

Identify 3-5 emerging leaders who share your passion and invest in their development. Teach them your approach, give them tools to replicate your work, and empower them to take on leadership roles. Consider launching a mentorship circle, an online training group, or a leadership development program where participants can support and learn from each other.

When you shift from direct giving to building a network of changemakers, your work no longer depends on your personal availability—it continues to expand organically.

4. Build Strategic Partnerships to Expand Your Influence

No large-scale movement happens in isolation. The fastest way to grow is to align with people and organizations that share your mission. Strategic partnerships allow you to tap into existing networks, resources, and audiences that amplify your reach.

How to Take Action

Create a Partnership Impact Map by listing 5-10 individuals or organizations whose missions align with yours. Reach out and explore collaborative initiatives, joint projects, or co-hosted events. Instead of leading with a request, focus on how you can create mutual value—when both sides benefit, partnerships thrive.

5. Advocate for Systemic Change

IMPACT Makers don’t just respond to problems—they work to prevent them by challenging outdated systems and influencing change at a broader level. This could mean advocating for policy shifts, pushing for industry changes, or mobilizing a movement around an issue.

How to Take Action

Identify one key issue related to your mission that needs reform. Research the policies, industry standards, or structural barriers that need to be challenged. Then, develop a Change Advocacy Blueprint—a plan for raising awareness, engaging stakeholders, and influencing decision-makers. Whether through public speaking, writing, or community organizing, advocacy ensures that you’re not just fixing problems—you’re creating long-term solutions.

6. Position Yourself as a Thought Leader

If you want to shape industries and movements, people need to see you as a leader in your space. Thought leadership isn’t about self-promotion—it’s about becoming a trusted voice who provides clarity, direction, and solutions.

How to Take Action

Start publishing content that reflects your expertise. Write articles, create videos, host a podcast, or speak at events. The more consistently you share your insights, the more credibility and influence you build. Create a Content Leadership Plan where you commit to sharing your ideas on a regular basis.

7. Measure and Amplify Your Impact

What gets measured gets expanded. If you don’t track your progress, you can’t improve it—or show others why your work matters.

Tracking impact is about both data and storytelling. Numbers provide proof, but stories create emotional connection and inspiration.

How to Take Action

Build an Impact Dashboard where you track key metrics like the number of people mentored, programs launched, or policies influenced. Then, collect success stories—written testimonials, video interviews, and case studies that capture real transformation. Share this impact publicly to inspire new supporters, attract funding, and grow your mission.
