From the Fox's Den - SAOTG January Newsletter

Happy New Year from all of us at SAOTG! ?

January is a month of fresh beginnings, brimming with the promise of new opportunities. For students, it’s an ideal time to translate hope into action by setting clear goals for the new semester. At SAOTG, we know that achieving these aspirations requires more than just motivation. Student must harness?the power of Executive Function (EF) skills to create lasting habits and routines.?

Yet, as the weeks unfold, the excitement of resolutions can fade?and challenges arise. This is a natural part of growth, and we believe these moments are where the magic happens. With the right systems and support, students can navigate these hurdles, transforming temporary setbacks into stepping stones for success. Every day is a new opportunity to refine, learn, and thrive. Let’s dive into the strategies that will help make this semester one for the books!

For parents and support professionals looking to empower students, here are our January tips:

Small Wins Build Momentum?-?Students often set ambitious goals at the start of the semester, but these can feel overwhelming as reality sets in. Encourage your student to break down larger objectives into smaller, more manageable steps. For instance, instead of aiming to “ace every test,” focus on achievable actions like completing assignments a day early or summarizing class notes weekly. These small wins not only build confidence but also create a steady rhythm of success throughout the semester.

The 'R' in S.M.A.R.T. Goals?-?The “R” in S.M.A.R.T. goals stands for “Realistic,” a key component for helping students transition smoothly back into their school routine. After the break, ambitious plans can easily become overwhelming if they’re not grounded in what’s achievable. Encourage students to set realistic goals that align with their commitments—assignments, tests, extracurriculars—and build a schedule that reflects their capacity. By using tools like color-coded planners or shared digital calendars, students can balance their workload while staying flexible to adjust when needed. The “R” ensures goals aren’t just aspirations but actionable steps toward success this semester.

Action-Oriented Environment?-?A productive study space can make a world of difference for a student’s focus and motivation. Help your student organize a home workspace by ensuring essential supplies like pens, sticky notes, and planners are within reach. Set boundaries for device usage during study time to minimize distractions and foster concentration. A well-prepared environment lays the foundation for students to turn their motivation into meaningful progress.

SAOTG &?the Anxiety Society Podcast?-?We’re thrilled to share that Evan Weinberger, our Founder & CEO,?was recently featured on The Anxiety Society Podcast. In this two-part series, Evan delves into essential life skills for students and parents alike, focusing on practical strategies for managing stress and improving EF?skills in today’s fast-paced world. Catch both episodes?at this link.

Parent Presentation at St. Thomas Episcopal School -?We are excited to announce that Evan will be the inaugural presenter?to kick off a new parent night speaker series?at St. Thomas Episcopal School on January 23rd. Evan will share research-backed strategies for helping students develop critical EF skills such as building positive habits and routines, managing both physical and digital organization, and effectively using planners and portals. Participants will leave with actionable ideas that can be immediately implemented to support their students’ success both inside and outside the classroom.

Looking Forward to the Best Year Yet?-??As we reflect on 2024 and move into 2025, we recommit to our founding mission: to help capable students achieve greater success by improving their EF skills. This year is already shaping up to be our best yet at SAOTG! With a growing team and some awesome new partnerships, we’re ready to?serve more students than ever. Look out for some exciting news about even more program enhancements very soon. Here’s to a year full of growth, collaboration, and brighter futures!?
