From the Fox's Den - SAOTG August Newsletter

Let’s skip the back-to-school preamble this year. We all know that school is only a few weeks away. But knowledge isn’t the same thing as action, is it? We’re all aware of what’s coming, and some of us might even know what needs to be done. Yet, action is what separates intentions from accomplishments. In this year’s back-to-school newsletter, we’re cutting the fluff to make room for action-oriented tips that will help you and your students take the steps needed for a successful school year.

Here are our expert, action-oriented tips for this month:

Take Imperfect Action — James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits , reminds us that “the imperfect project you actually complete is worth more than the perfect project you never finish.” The pursuit of perfection often leads to paralysis, where the fear of making mistakes stops progress altogether. Encourage your students to take small, actionable steps, even if they’re not perfect. Each step forward, no matter how small, builds momentum and leads to meaningful progress. Remind your students?that progress, not perfection, is the goal, and that consistent action over time is what drives real success.

Don’t be Hamlet — Indecisiveness can be debilitating. Hamlet, Shakespeare’s famously indecisive Danish prince , grappled with forgiveness and revenge for four acts only to be slain by inaction in the fifth. In the classroom and at home, indecision wastes valuable time and energy. Help your students make informed decisions quickly by teaching them to evaluate options, consider possible outcomes, and then act with confidence. Quick, decisive actions prevent small issues from snowballing into larger problems. By encouraging decisiveness, you empower students to take control of their academic journey and reduce anxiety associated with uncertainty.

Fail Forward — The famous physicist Niels Bohr once said, “An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field.” This idea, echoed by everyone from Thomas Edison to Maya Angelou, emphasizes the value of learning through failure. Encourage students to embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth , reminding them that each failure is a chance to learn something new and improve. When they fail, they are not falling behind—they’re moving forward, armed with new knowledge and resilience. Failing forward ensures that each setback becomes a stepping stone to future success, and that perseverance, not perfection, is what ultimately leads to mastery.?
