From the Fox's Den - Nov. Newsletter

As the calendar flips to November, midterm season?looms as surely as the Thanksgiving holiday ahead. November is a month of preparation. The parallel between a family's Thanksgiving preparations and a student's midterm?prep is uncanny. Both require attention to detail, periodic adjustments, and dependable?support systems.

Just as families across the country begin their meticulous Thanksgiving preparations by crossing items off the shopping list and allocating cooking responsibilities, so must students?ready themselves for mid-terms. The environment is different, but the core principles are the same. Students and Thanksgiving preparers must plan ahead, adjust to changing circumstances, and enlist the help of others.?They must look back at the past,?double down on the methods that have served them?well, and tweak those that haven't. It's all about continuous improvement and daily progress.?

For parents and support professionals ready to help students succeed this November, follow these Thanksgiving-themed tips:

Setting the Stage for Finals?-?Just as a Thanksgiving feast requires careful planning—from the shopping to the timing of each dish—so does preparing for mid-terms. Encourage students to map out their study 'menu' well in advance, choosing study materials and topics like ingredients for their favorite recipes. Enlisting the help of experts (e.g., teachers, coaches/tutors) is never a bad idea. They should also allow each subject the right amount of time to 'cook,' avoiding the last-minute 'frying' that can leave their preparation half-baked. Low and slow is the way to go for cumulative exams, as is the case for most dishes. Lastly, remind students to 'taste-test' their knowledge with practice exams to ensure they're ready for the big day. Sometimes, you need a little more salt or pepper!

Encourage Gratitude?-?In the season of giving thanks, urge students to reflect on their academic journey and recognize their progress. Gratitude helps internally and externally. Far too many students surround themselves with negativity, and that negativity starts to cloud out all the good things that students and their support teams have accomplished. Recognition is an effective antidote to negativity. Encourage your students to make two lists this Thanksgiving. First, what they've learned and accomplished, acknowledging the effort made in self-gratitude. Second, all the people that have helped them this year in big and small ways. Reversing the negativity bias with this 10-minute exercise can pay dividends all school year long.?

Put Devices Down?- This time of year, we're reminded of the importance of personal connection and the technological barriers that prevent it. Although most of our device-related wisdom is related to the myth of multitasking and the difficulties of digital distractions, Thanksgiving provides a helpful time to address the social-emotional aspects of device management. Help and advise your students in moderating their screen time and selecting digital tools that aid rather than distract them from their studies, friends, and families. Encourage them to 'unplug' periodically, fostering a digital environment as carefully curated as a Thanksgiving centerpiece—functional, purposeful, and devoid of unnecessary clutter.

SAOTG in the Community?-??As part of our ongoing efforts to engage with the Greater Houston community, we continue to share our unique Executive Function knowledge with local schools and nonprofit groups. Over the last month, SAOTG President & CEO Evan Weinberger presented to parents at The Joy School, as well as a group of students through the Young Men's Service League. Both events focused on developing and adapting EF skills as students prepare for important transitions. Thank you for hosting?us!

SAOTG Coach Happy Hour?- Our team of all-star academic coaches is what makes our mission possible. Every day, our team helps hundreds of students master EF skills so they can get ahead and stay ahead. In recognition of our coaches' hard work, SAOTG hosted another company-wide happy hour earlier this month. We practice what we preach. As we gear up for mid-terms, it's crucial to recognize and celebrate our successes. We encourage students and companies everywhere to do the same this month!

Award-Winning Once Again?- This month, SAOTG was once again welcomed into the Bellaire Business Hall of Fame! This award is granted to companies that receive the Best of Bellaire Award for ten consecutive years. We're grateful to our Bellaire and surrounding community for its unwavering trust and support. We're committed to serving Bellaire and the Greater Houston community for many years to come. Please know the warm and?fuzzy feelings are definitely mutual. We love you!
