Many schools are only a month away from starting classes. As we say goodbye to the summer, it’s essential to shift our focus to preparation for the new academic year. Preparing for the school year involves more than just buying new supplies. Plus, back-to-school shopping is usually an August task.?In July, we want to focus on the long-game: how can we build a foundation to hit the ground running in August? Our July?tips focus on establishing?routines, building intangible skills like resilience, and tracking progress on summer projects.?
For parents and support professionals ready to help students transition from summer to school, here are our expert tips:
Preparation Beyond Supplies?-?Establishing routines in late July is the key to hitting the ground running come August. This month, help students reset and reestablish their evening and morning routines . Summer produces fun but erratic schedules. Now, we need to gradually shift students towards structure. Establish a consistent bedtime and?systematize the first hour of the morning with a checklist. Your August self will appreciate your foresight.
Build Resiliency?- Hurricane Berryl reminded everyone of the importance of resilience. Resilience , put simply, is the ability to bend and stretch without losing shape. It's what makes Lululemon pants $110 compared to $60 chinos from the Gap. It's also the secret ingredient to student success.?Resilient students handle the ups and downs of the school year with grace, leaning into what's controllable and ignoring the rest. This month, help students build resilience by emphasizing gratitude,?a positive mindset, and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth .?
Measure What Matters?- Sticking with the resiliency theme, July is also a great month to build momentum via small wins. Tracking progress and celebrating small achievements can significantly boost motivation and confidence over time.?Use the final weeks of summer to help students implement a tracking protocol for summer reading and math packets.?Set an attainable goal like ten pages of summer reading per day. Then, track progress daily and publicly. Throw an old school calendar on the wall and cross out the days.?Carry over these tracking habits into the school year to maintain consistency and productivity, ensuring that small wins are recognized and celebrated throughout the academic year.
SAOTG Summer Courses?- We love the summer months at SAOTG because our group classes are in full swing.?Last month, SAOTG instructors taught the?Launch: Executive Functioning Skills ?course at three underserved schools. We worked with students at?St. Ambrose Catholic School ,?St. Francis de Sales Catholic School , and?Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School ?to bring this transformative program to kids who need it most.?This month, our popular flagship 5-day Quest: Executive Function courses are back at the newly renovated SAOTG office. We'll help middle and high school students install essential habits within?our four pillars of Executive Function : organization, time management, learning skills, and impression management. Let's go!
Bellaire Family Counseling?-?Supporting schools, therapy practices, and child-centric nonprofit organizations?is integral to SAOTG's mission. A few weeks ago, Evan Weinberger,?President &?CEO of SAOTG, met with Bellaire Family Counseling . They?offer?counseling services for children (ages 2+), adolescents, adults, and families.?They believe that beautiful families come in all shapes and sizes, and that strong, connected relationships are the building blocks of healthy communities and happy lives. Recognizing?that families face unprecedented challenges today, they?support children, teens, and families as they navigate the challenges of life. Whether you have suffered a loss, are experiencing conflict in your home, or your child is struggling with anxiety, Bellaire Family Counseling may be able to help!
Ready to Rock the 2024-2025 School Year - The theme of this month's tail section is preparation, and we practice what we preach. As the 2024-2025 school year approaches, we're excited to help as many student as possible get ahead and stay ahead! In the coming weeks, we'll have our annual "all-hands" meeting, where we bring together the entire SAOTG team to discuss program enhancements to even better?serve our students and their families. We'll also be sharing all of our research-driven back to school material on our?Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , and Pinterest pages. Stay tuned!
