Removing the Funk: Overcoming Stinkin' Thinkin'

Have you ever had one of those weeks (or months) where everything seems to go wrong? Much like in cartoons, it feels like a rain cloud hangs over your head wherever you go. Everything that can go wrong is seemingly going wrong. What we fixed is now broken, and the anticipated outcomes are far different from reality.

Why does this funk happen on some days? Do you ever feel the anxiety, the cloud of confusion and discord that settles in like an ocean fog? Maybe you're feeling off your game, out of sync with your clients, team members, and peers. Maybe you're peering at the clock or checking social media for a semblance of balance.

Your chest aches with a feeling of unsettledness that will not dissipate. You catastrophize, envisioning the worst possible scenarios, making up stories, presuming outcomes, and overgeneralizing. You leap from "I failed" to "I failed and should quit my job."

Amara's Journey: Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Amara, a seasoned team leader, recently faced a series of challenges. It started with an unresolved client issue, causing dissatisfaction to ripple through the team. At the same time, a key high performer resigned unexpectedly, and another team member was terminated for misappropriating company funds. This turmoil led to missed business targets and declining team engagement.

Initially, Amara succumbed to stinkin' thinkin', doubting her capabilities and fearing the worst. However, she quickly realized this mindset was unproductive. Drawing on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy principles, she decided to change her approach.

Amara called a team meeting to discuss the challenges openly. She encouraged her team to share their ideas and perspectives, fostering a collaborative atmosphere. Together, they resolved the client issue, rebuilt trust, and developed a strategic plan with clear, achievable goals. Regular check-ins helped monitor progress and maintain engagement.

By shifting from stinkin' thinkin' to constructive problem-solving, Amara turned a difficult situation into an opportunity for growth. Her team became more cohesive and motivated, finding renewed purpose in their work.

Removing Stinkin' Thinkin'

Zig Ziglar, the well-known motivational speaker and author, popularized the phrase “stinkin’ thinkin’.” The basis for this concept was developed and researched by Albert Ellis, an influential American psychologist who founded Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). He used this phrase to describe irrational and self-defeating thought patterns.

Removing stinkin' thinkin' starts with recognizing these irrational thoughts. Here are a few steps to help you regain your balance:

  • Acknowledge the Thought: Identify and acknowledge the negative thought. Awareness is the first step to change.
  • Challenge the Thought: Question the validity of the thought. Is it based on facts or assumptions? Is it helpful or harmful?
  • Replace the Thought: Substitute the negative thought with a more positive, realistic one. Focus on what you can control and take actionable steps.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that everyone makes mistakes and has off days. Learn from the experience and move forward.
  • Seek Support: Talk to a trusted colleague, mentor, or coach. Sometimes, an external perspective can provide clarity and reassurance.

By taking these steps, you can break free from stinkin' thinkin' and lead with a clear, positive mindset. Remember, leadership is not about never experiencing challenges, but about how we respond to them. Embrace the journey, learn from each experience, and keep moving forward.

Lessons Learned from the Funk

Reflecting on my own leadership journey, I’ve encountered my share of funks, those times when challenges pile up and seem insurmountable. I've learned that the fog rolling in like it does in the Bay is temporary, and how we handle it can make all the difference.

Here are some key lessons I've learned:

1. Stay Grounded: When things go awry, it's easy to get swept away by negative emotions. Staying grounded and focusing on the present helps in making rational decisions.

2. Embrace Vulnerability: It's okay to admit when you're struggling. Sharing your challenges with your team fosters a culture of openness and trust.

3. Focus on the Positives: Even in the worst of times, there are always positives. Highlighting small wins can boost morale and keep everyone motivated.

4. Adaptability is Key: Plans may fail, and strategies may need to change. Being adaptable and flexible ensures that you can navigate through any storm.

5. Empower Your Team: Your team is your greatest asset. Empowering them to take initiative and contribute solutions not only lightens your load but also strengthens the team's cohesiveness.

These lessons have helped me steer through my own funks and emerge as a stronger, more resilient leader. Remember, the fog will lift, and clarity will return. How we respond to these moments defines our leadership journey.
