From Flop to Top: 10 Interview Hacks

A dear friend reached out via LinkedIn this morning asking for some job interview tips. After I wrote them out and sent them to her, I thought someone else might benefit from them. So I edited the tips to be a bit more generic and am posting them here for the greater good.

1. Scour the company’s website for business info, and job-related info so you will know their priorities, strategies, and focus areas

2. Learn about the work they do in your area of interest

3. Scour Google for articles floating around about the company, and their job specialty work

4. For EVERY job responsibility, requirement, and "preferred" skill they have posted related to the position, come up with - and practice telling - at least one story around each of these so when they ask you behavioral questions (tell me about a time when you...) you will have stories ready to tell

5. If you know who the interviewer will be, internet/LinkedIn-stalk the person so you may know what they do and what they are interested in for conversation purposes (e.g., "In my research for the job I found that you.... Would you tell me a bit more about that?)

6. Look up a couple of their competitors so you'll know a little bit about them and what their company is facing regarding competition in their field

7. Be prepared to share a couple highlights of your career that could relate to the job you are applying for so that the interviewer can literally see your enthusiasm on display

8. If they include having a sense of humor in the job description, share a story about how your sense of humor manifests. Note how important it is to you and how much you enjoy working with people who also have one

9. Be familiar with the professional organizations related to the job (e.g., SHRM for HR, IACB for communicators, ATD for trainers, etc.)

10. Bonus: Go to gemini.google.com or the AI platform of your choice and enter a detailed prompt asking it to provide for you possible questions a recruiter from (insert company name) might ask you, and then follow up with a prompt asking the platform to provide answers to the questions just provided. If you haven't messed around with AI, you should, at least for a few minutes, in case it comes up in the interview. You could also ask it to write a story about the why people want to work for (insert company name)

Thanks Shane O'Connor! A really good read for all the interviewees out there. I generally follow these steps and it gives me confidence during the interview. Also, it helps the candidate develop genuine interest in understanding the organisation’s motto, way of operating, people friendly policies etc. and taking the right decision. Inspite of all these, sometimes I do feel it gives an impression of over confidence, flattery, over qualification to the interviewer and negates the intention. It would be great to hear from your experience on how to balance that out and still excel during an interview.
