From Flight Safety to Cyber Safety: Why Cybersecurity is the Key to Aviation’s Future
I was fortunate to attend the Global Cybersecurity Forum held in Riyadh on October 2-3. As a proud Saudi, it’s inspiring to see our country not only hosting but leading discussions on key topics across all industries! The forum highlighted the importance of global cooperation, developing cybersecurity skills, and protecting children online. Key discussions focused on how to use AI for cybersecurity, build international standards, and close the skills gap to deal with growing cyber threats.
From an aviation perspective, it’s clear that cybersecurity needs to be a priority. A single breach can disrupt operations and affect passenger trust, making it as critical as flight safety itself.
We’ve seen several major cybersecurity incidents impact aviation worldwide. For example, in 2018, British Airways suffered a data breach that exposed the personal and financial information of 380,000 passengers. In another case, the 2017 NotPetya ransomware attack caused delays and disrupted Ukraine’s Boryspil Airport. Even Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport had to shut down its public Wi-Fi due to a ransomware attack in 2018, causing inconvenience to travelers. These incidents show how vulnerable the aviation industry is and highlight the need for strong cybersecurity measures to protect systems and keep operations running smoothly.
In Saudi Arabia, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has taken proactive steps to improve cybersecurity standards. Recently, GACA achieved international certifications, including ISO 27001 for Information Security and ISO 22301 for Business Continuity. This shows GACA’s dedication to building a secure cyber environment that supports aviation operations and aligns with Vision 2030’s goals for a modern, safe, and advanced aviation system.

To lead in aviation cybersecurity, it’s crucial to focus on several key areas. First, Adopting Advanced Technologies like AI, machine learning, and blockchain enables real-time threat detection, secure data sharing, and early risk identification. Regular system upgrades are also essential to Keep constant and Regular System Upgrades, replacing outdated systems with modern solutions to reduce weaknesses. It’s equally important to Enforce Collaboration by partnering with global aviation organizations and cybersecurity agencies to share information and adopt best practices. For future aviation forums, let us bring in experts and discuss the cyber threats in aviation as one of the main agenda items, ensuring that the aviation sector collectively addresses these challenges. All systems used by airlines, airports, and authorities should work in harmony to establish Unified Regulations, creating consistent cybersecurity policies across the aviation sector. Additionally, it’s necessary to invest heavily in Employee Training to provide regular training on cybersecurity awareness and ensure staff are well-prepared to respond to potential threats effectively.

Future aviation forums should include cybersecurity as a key agenda item. We must bring experts together to discuss emerging cyber threats and share solutions. All systems used by airlines, airports, and authorities should work cohesively to establish a strong cybersecurity framework.
A single cyber breach can have a significant impact on the industry, making recovery a long and difficult process. As reliance on technology continues to grow, we must invest equally in cybersecurity readiness. Cybersecurity in aviation is not optional, it’s as essential as safety itself. A strong cybersecurity framework ensures the protection of sensitive information, keeps operations running without disruption, and maintains trust in the aviation industry as we navigate an increasingly digital world.
