From Fitness to Finance: The Ultimate Travel App Guide

Travel tech is constantly evolving, and I love staying ahead of the curve.

Over the years, I’ve tested countless apps that elevate my travel experience. Some are lifesavers, and others are just fun to have. But with AI and new innovations flooding app stores, which ones truly stand the test of time?

Look - I'm very happy to share mine if you share yours.

My Ultimate Travel App Guide

First, a confession.

I'm an Apple user, so some of my app choices lean toward iOS. But most are universal and designed to enhance business and leisure travel alike. By nature of being apps, they are available through a single device for ease and an elevated travel experience.

Another confession is that many of these apps are not "new," but their enduring existence and innovation make them great contenders.

With that, let's dive in!

Stay Active and Well on the Road

  • Strava : I use this to track all my activities, from gym classes to ultimate frisbee games. I rely on its heatmaps to find walk and run routes when traveling. (Or ask the concierge).
  • Calm / Headspace : I've tried both, but I currently prefer Calm for relaxation, focus, and winding down during my travels.
  • Garmin Connect: After researching both, I opted for a Garmin over an Apple Watch for its in-depth health tracking—personal preference, but both have great travel features!
  • Sleep Cycle : I depend on this alarm clock app that adjusts to my sleep patterns and gets progressively louder, which is crucial for early meetings or flights.

Entertainment and Learning on the Go

  • 苹果 Music / Spotify : I use these as my main sources for music and podcasts. I'm intrigued by Spotify's recent addition of audiobooks.
  • Audible : I turn to this for audiobooks, though I've also experimented with library apps for digital reads while traveling.
  • Kindle: While I love physical books, I rely on the Kindle app for various reads with adjustable lighting, perfect for any travel environment.
  • YouTube / Netflix : I use these for hotel room workouts (Yoga with Adriene is my favorite) and entertainment during downtime.

Getting Around and Managing Money

  • Google Maps : I find this essential for navigation, timing distances, and discovering nearby points of interest in new locations.
  • Uber : I prefer this app for ground transportation. It accommodates different group sizes and provides green options.
  • Apple Wallet: I store my cards, boarding passes, and hotel reservations here as a convenient backup.
  • Airline and Hotel Apps: I primarily use the Air Canada and Marriott Hotels apps at the moment for check-ins, points tracking, bag tracking, and timing considerations. However, depending on where I'm going, I also use WestJet quite often and the International airline apps.
  • Weather App: I always check this for wardrobe planning and to anticipate any transport issues during my trip. (Walking or driving).

Work and Social on the Move

  • LinkedIn / Instagram / X / Facebook / TikTok : I use LinkedIn most for professional networking, replacing traditional business cards. The rest are great for light social updates. Once, I didn't realize my brother-in-law was stranded at the same airport as I was until I saw a social update. Happy impromptu reunion!
  • ChatGPT : I find this helpful in getting tour and restaurant suggestions and local tips for new destinations.
  • Notion : I use Notion to keep myself organized and productive with project tasks, with complimentary Google Drive documents where it makes sense.
  • Email Apps: I use the Apple app to consolidate my personal and business emails on the go.
  • Camera App: I rely on this to capture photos and videos, preserving memories of my journeys.

What's particularly wonderful is how these apps work seamlessly together. For instance, I might use Google Maps to find a highly rated local restaurant, then use Uber to get there, pay with Apple Wallet, and finally share my experience on Instagram—all seamlessly integrated into one travel experience.

A Note on Privacy and Security

While these apps enhance travel, they also collect data. Before using public Wi-Fi, review your privacy settings and consider a VPN for extra security.

The Future of Travel Apps

Looking ahead, we're seeing exciting developments in travel app technology. Augmented reality (AR) features are integrated into navigation apps for more intuitive directions. AI-powered personalization is becoming more sophisticated, offering tailored recommendations based on your preferences and past behavior. And Blockchain Technology is being explored for more secure and efficient booking and identity verification processes.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, these apps have revolutionized the way I travel, making journeys more efficient, enjoyable, and personalized.

From staying fit and entertained to navigating new cities and managing finances, there's an app for nearly every aspect of travel. Many of these apps can be used in our everyday lives, which can help bring good habits and routines on the road. By leveraging these digital tools, we can focus more on experiencing our destinations and less on the logistics of getting there.

If you wanted to add a sustainability section I'd shout out Happy Cow for plant-based eating and You Smart Thing's web app for low-carbon travel options.

I'm really surprised to not see TripIt for travel organization or something like Street Parking or Arnold Schwarzenegger's app on there for fitness.
