From Finance Director to Boxing Champion: Embracing the Fight for Success

In both our personal and professional lives, we often seek opportunities to challenge ourselves and foster growth. Over the past fifteen years, my career has been anchored in strategic financial leadership, affording me the privilege to collaborate with fantastic organisations and learn from exceptional leaders in Mexico, London, and Singapore.

After fifteen rewarding years, I've decided to take a well-deserved career break to rest, reconnect, and explore new horizons. Just before embarking on this break, I embraced an unexpected challenge that profoundly shifted my perspective on growth—both personally and professionally.

This is the story of my transition from Finance Director to Boxing Champion, and the invaluable lessons gained along this transformative journey.

The Ring Beckons: A bold step into Boxing

When I signed up for a white-collar boxing competition in Singapore, I knew I was embarking on an exciting new challenge. I was paired with an opponent who was younger, heavier, and more experienced, the odds seemed stacked against me. Rather than focus on these apparent disadvantages, I chose to leverage my strengths—discipline, consistency, growth mindset and a lifetime of athletic pursuits including cycling, weightlifting, and running.

Taking on such a big challenge wasn't just about boxing; it was about pushing myself beyond my perceived limits and embracing the discomfort of growth. This decision paralleled many of the bold steps I've taken in my career, where relocating countries, taking on new roles, projects, and leadership positions required me to trust in my abilities and commit fully to the journey. Just as in the professional world, where some challenges can seem daunting, stepping into the ring reminded me the value of resilience, adaptability, and determination.

Knocking Out Stereotypes: Celebrating the Beauty of Contrast

Throughout my career, I've had my share of fighting against stereotypes. As a female Latina navigating international professional arenas, I’ve seamlessly integrated qualities often perceived as contrasting. Vulnerability and kindness have been my guiding principles, complementing rather than conflicting with assertiveness and a growth mindset. These qualities, though not typically associated with boxing, are integral to what makes my journey into the ring so interesting. Boxing challenged me to confront not only physical opponents but also societal expectations. It taught me that strength manifests in diverse forms—both within the boardroom and beyond.

Forging Strength: Training and Community In Preparation for Battle

Preparing for my fight was intense and incredibly rewarding. I trained almost every day for three months, sometimes twice per day. I approached each training session with purpose and determination, blending group classes and private sessions to refine specific skills. Each session humbled me, pushing me to master the basics while learning to navigate discomfort and maintain focus with resilience. In both the ring and leadership roles, growth mindset, consistency, and a hunger for learning are paramount.

Being part of a supportive community was invaluable. Training alongside passionate boxing enthusiasts and having my partner join me on this journey (who also became a boxing champion!) provided tremendous motivation. Their support fuelled me through tough days and amplified every achievement.

Having a great coach was pivotal. In the ring, my coach was my eyes and guide, offering crucial advice during critical moments. Effective leadership in the workplace is similarly essential. I've been fortunate to have worked with amazing leaders who believed in me and provided invaluable guidance. They've shown me the importance of having the right support and mentorship to make the most of my strengths and potential.

Beyond the Ropes: Facing Doubts and Building Resilience

Life has a funny way of both building you up and humbling you. Initially, in boxing, I received praise for my performance—after all, Mexico has a reputation for producing world-class boxers! ?? However, sparring sessions quickly brought me back to reality. Facing opponents considerably heavier and taller in the ring forced me to confront my limitations and learn quickly—how to land effective punches, defend against strikes, and endure the inevitable blows.

One challenging sparring session stands out vividly. I froze, unable to connect with punches or effectively defend myself. I was disappointed. Did this challenging session mean I was inadequate, or did it signify that I needed to adapt, learn, and improve?

To me, setbacks are opportunities for growth and learning, but in that moment the truth is that self-doubt crept in for a minute. Instead of succumbing to self-pity, I chose to redouble my efforts, I trained harder, listened intently to my coach's advice, and committed to being present and focused. This shift made all the difference in my next sparring sessions and also during fight night.

Similarly, in life and career, there are times when finding our footing can be challenging. I’ve encountered moments where I felt drained and frustrated, questioning if I was falling short. In hindsight, these experiences have taught me the importance of taking a step back, seeking guidance from mentors, family, and friends, and regaining perspective to redefine success on my own terms.

Lights, Camera, Victory: The Thrill of Fight Night

I will never forget my fight night. Stepping into the ring was an electrifying moment.

With my blue gloves on, I made my entrance to the beats of my walk-in song, soaking in the energy of over a thousand cheering fans at Marquee, a renowned nightclub in Singapore.

As the announcer called out my name, 'Palomaaaa "Dinamitaaa" Jimeneeeez,' I faced my opponent— she was strong, prepared, and equally determined.

Three rounds, two minutes each—six minutes that summed up three months of rigorous training. Round one began with a shaky start. I felt overwhelmed, took a punch early on, and received a standing count (a nerve-wracking moment for any boxer). Round two was pivotal. My coach's voice steadied me. I honed my focus to a 'tunnel vision,' blocking out the noise of the crowd and music, zeroing in on my opponent. This mental shift allowed me to keep my composure and strategise a comeback, delivering a series of ten right hands that earned a standing count on my opponent. The crowd erupted in cheers, counting along with each punch. On the third round, I kept my momentum and composure, leveraged on my training, secured another standing count on my opponent and finished strong.

My training and preparation paid off as I maintained my focus and executed my strategy. In the end, I clinched victory by split decision. The triumph wasn't just about the win—it was a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of my coach, training partners, and cheering crowd. This experience taught me the power of being present, being focused, persevering, and seizing moments of opportunity to achieve success.

Gloves off - Reflecting on my journey

Stepping into the world of boxing was a completely new experience for me—I had never set foot in a boxing ring before. Embracing this challenge with an open mind, humility, and a growth mindset, supported by a strong network, was transformative and deeply fulfilling.

My journey from finance to the boxing ring has reinforced my belief in the power of focus, resilience, and preparation. Just as in boxing, the professional world presents challenges that require a strategic approach and a winning mindset. By embracing these principles, we can overcome obstacles and achieve ambitious goals.

While boxing may seem solitary, it was a collaborative effort for me. Inside the ring, it was just me and my opponent, yet I drew strength and encouragement from my entire support network. Their presence, both physically and energetically, profoundly impacted my preparation and performance.

I encourage you to find your own "boxing ring"—a challenge that pushes you beyond your limits and brings out your best. With the right mindset and support, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
