Navigating Risks- The Parallel Journeys of Golf and Life
Hello and welcome back to From Fairways to Pathways - our monthly dive into all things golf and life. Today we’re discussing risk and how to find the right balance between playing safe for security, or taking risks for potential rewards.?
How do you navigate the choice between taking calculated risks or playing safe when the rewards and the triumphs can be so exhilarating? If you’re avoiding unnecessary risk to ensure stability, you could potentially be limiting your growth and fulfilment.?
It’s a balancing act. So let's explore the links between risk-taking in golf and life and how navigating these challenges can lead to profound personal growth and success.
Embracing uncertainty
Life will confront us with difficult decisions - some decisions are more taxing than others of course(!) - that require us to step into the unknown, to take a risk. We inherently understand that a risk holds within it an opportunity to grow as well as the chance for failure. And for some people, the exciting prospect of what could be is what propels them towards it. For others it’s the relative safety that they crave.?
So what differentiates these two kinds of people? I believe it’s their appetite for embracing uncertainty. Their fear of failure and how much of a hold it has on their decision making.
In golf, there are certainly two types of player: The one who plays it safe, who aims for fairways only, plots their way around the course - believe it or not, this was Tiger Woods. He only took a risk if he was absolutely forced into one. On the other hand, Phil Mickelson would play on the edge, risky shots, flicks and total feel because he was excited by the potential upside. And their scores reflect this. Yes Tiger Woods has one more major competitions, but Phil Mickelson has in fact hit lower scores.
Of course we’re talking about embracing some calculated risks. Embracing the uncertainty of life because this is the first step towards growth. It can open the door to new possibilities and opportunities that lie beyond our comfort zone.
Calculated risks
As alluded to above, successful risk-taking is not about blindly charging ahead, but rather about making informed decisions based on careful analysis and assessment of potential outcomes - the textbook definition of a calculated risk. On the golf course we evaluate everything to determine where the risks are and what impact they have on our upcoming shot. We look at the lie of the ball, the weather and course conditions before selecting the right club. We are constantly calculating risks even if we didn’t realise it. And of course, we all weigh the pros and cons of various options in our lives before taking action.?
So don’t be afraid of taking a risk, calculate the options and think about the potential outcomes before deciding whether or not to dive in.

Learning from failure
A huge component of a positive mindset is improving your relationship with the idea of failure. Failure, I’m sorry to tell you, is part of life and certainly part of golf and it will happen from time-to-time. So how we react to these moments is what matters.?
One of the most valuable lessons is that failure is not the end but rather a stepping stone towards success. Every missed shot on the golf course and every setback in life provides an opportunity for learning and growth.?
Embracing failure may be a difficult concept for some people, but if you can think of it as just a natural part of the journey, you can cultivate resilience and perseverance that propels you forward.
Stepping out of your comfort zone
Linked to embracing uncertainty - but with a little more oomph!?
It’s called a comfort zone for a reason, because it’s nice and comfy. It’s safe. However; “Nobody got anything great, by playing it safe.” The rewards for those who dare to venture beyond their comfort zones are very real. Whether it's attempting a risky shot over a water hazard or pursuing a new career path, stepping out of familiar territory is essential for personal growth and development. While it may feel daunting at first and it may even feel too difficult, the rewards of taking bold (calculated) risks often outweigh the temporary discomfort.
The parallels between taking risks in golf and life are undeniable. They both demand courage, resilience and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. And while taking risks can lead to thrilling victories, it's essential to strike a balance between risk and caution. Finding this balance ensures that risk-taking remains a calculated endeavour rather than a reckless gamble.?
