From Endpoints to the Cloud: A Look at Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention

First, we need to understand what data loss prevention (DLP) is. DLP is a set of technologies and processes that are designed to prevent the loss, theft, or unauthorized access of sensitive information. This can include personal information, financial data, intellectual property, and more.

Why DLP is important.

Data breaches can be costly, both in terms of financial losses and damage to an organization's reputation. In some cases, data breaches can even lead to legal action. Implementing DLP measures can help prevent these costly incidents from occurring.

Microsoft Purview comes with Data Loss Prevention capabilities that organizations can use to protect their data. These include:

  1. Endpoint DLP: This type of DLP targets end user devices (Windows 10/11 and MacOS) and helps to prevent data loss using machine learning capabilities that monitor and control how the data is stored or transmitted in the devices.
  2. Cloud DLP: This type of DLP is specifically designed for cloud environments and helps to prevent data loss by monitoring and controlling the data that is stored or transmitted within the cloud Software as a Service environments. This can be Microsoft Teams chat, OneDrive, SharePoint, Salesforce or Drop box
  3. Email DLP: This type of DLP is designed to prevent sensitive information from being sent via email. It can monitor outgoing emails for specific keywords or patterns and prevent those emails from being sent if they contain sensitive information. Both the email body and attachments are scanned for sensitive information.

Implementing DLP measures can be a complex process, as it involves identifying the data that needs to be protected and where exactly it is located in the organisation, determining which DLP option are most appropriate for full coverage, and developing policies and procedures for managing sensitive data and DLP violation.

However, the benefits of DLP are clear: by implementing these measures, organizations can reduce the risk of data breaches, protect their sensitive information, compy to regulatory requirements and avoid the costly consequences of a security incident.

In conclusion, data loss prevention is a crucial part of any organization's security strategy. By implementing DLP measures, organizations can protect their sensitive information, be compliant, reduce the risk of data breaches, and avoid the costly consequences of a security incident.
