A long time ago, I was fascinated by this program called ELIZA where you could type in text and ELIZA prompted for further responses by asking you questions based on your last response.
Of course, the excitement wore off quickly, but I was none the less amazed at the time; this was in the 1980s.
Surprisingly, what I didn't know at the time is that ELIZA was developed in the 1960s, artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) have come a long way since then.?
ELIZA was able to mimic human communication through the use of basic pattern matching and substitution algorithms. While the computer couldn't interpret the meaning of the words it was reading, it was still convincing enough to keep you engaged for a long time.
Now, we have artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT that can comprehend and produce language with a great deal more richness and complexity. These systems may learn and get better over time because they have access to a plethora of data and potent computational resources.

Modern AI systems like ChatGPT have a much deeper comprehension of language than ELIZA does. ELIZA relied on elementary logic operations like pattern matching and substitution, therefore, it couldn't grasp the context of a question but rather just gave a canned response. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is a deep-learning-based tool capable of comprehending the context, meaning, and intent of the text being communicated.
The contemporary AI systems can learn from far more data, which is another key distinction. ELIZA could only learn from a tiny subset of data and a restricted set of rules. In contrast, contemporary AI systems can learn from enormous volumes of data, like ChatGPT. Because of this, they are able to give more genuine and precise answers.
AI has evolved over the years since the 1950s and 1960s, starting with the creation of programs that focused on specific tasks, expert systems in the 1980s and machine learning in the 1990s. Finally in the mid 2000s, machine learning benefited from the popularity of neural networks.
It's safe to say that a lot has changed in the field of artificial intelligence and natural language processing since ELIZA first appeared all the way up to the present day with cutting-edge tools like ChatGPT. Technology has come a long way in its ability to comprehend and produce human speech, and the prospects for further development in this area are promising.
Today's AI systems can understand and generate much more complex and nuanced language, and they have access to vast amounts of data and powerful computing resources. When compared to today's AI systems, which can learn and develop over time, Eliza was limited to carrying out only the tasks it was explicitly taught. Nevertheless, ELIZA was the first proof of concept that computers could interpret human language, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of natural language processing and artificial intelligence.
Like any past technology, ChatGPT is the popular kid in the news these days, toted as the future Google killer and the next evolution of the internet. I see it more of a tool like all the other tools that we use. Whether it is used wisely or abused depends on the users, but it is none the less a tool that complements all the other tools. The availability of these tools and their ease of use are where the future lies.?
