From the Editor: Is this what the future of dementia care looks like?

This week’s announcement that the government will double dementia research funding will have a significant impact on the social care sector, according to Will Donnelly , co-founder of later living marketplace Lottie .

Research will be doubled to £160 million by 2024 in memory of the late Dame Barbara Windsor, with the aim of boosting the number of clinical trials and innovative dementia research projects.

“It's such great news the government has pledged to double dementia research funding. Almost one million people in the UK are living with dementia and this is only expected to increase over the next few years,” says Will. “The new dementia mission will have a huge impact on the diagnosis, treatment, and care plans for those living with dementia, elevating their quality of life. From clinical research, support offered by doctors and medical experts to the care offered at care homes and by carers, the new dementia mission will drive positive changes to the care sector.”

According to Will, here’s what the future of dementia care will look like:

Research led

With greater funding allocated to dementia research, experts will use these insights to improve the standard of dementia care across the world.

From spotting early signs of diagnosis, to understanding the cause and creating new dementia care plans and frameworks, research will be a driving factor in each of these new initiatives.

Technology driven

Now more than ever we are seeing technology advancements in the elder care industry and this is a trend only expected to increase. Our new research has found online searches for ‘dementia technology’ have increased by 125 per cent over the last 12 months.

Every day we are seeing new assistive technology come to market with the main aim of helping those with dementia live independently as possible. As we see a greater investment in dementia research, the quality of assistive technology will only increase.

Elevating life after a diagnosis

As our understanding of dementia develops the care industry will be able to offer very specific and tailored care to each dementia patient.

With greater insights into the signs, symptoms and causes of dementia care homes can use these findings to develop their dementia friendly spaces and activities. As well as working with families and residents to create highly personalised care plans – elevating the quality of life for those living with dementia.
