I was delighted to be invited to Vegetarian for Life ’s 2023 Awards for Excellence in Vegetarian and Vegan Care Catering at the Houses of Parliament last week.

Care charity Vegetarian for Life (VfL) revealed the winners of its 2023 Awards at a ceremony themed around Sustainability in the Care Sector, which featured inspiring talks and workshops on how care catering can become more environmentally sustainable.

Award categories ranged from Veggie Care Chef of the Year to Hospital Caterer of the Year – with more nominations than ever before. Launched in 2016, the Awards highlight the importance of catering well for older vegetarians and vegans. VfL recently surveyed 1,000 care homes to find out how many residents are vegan or vegetarian. Since the survey was last commissioned in 2014, the number of vegans in residential care has increased by an incredible 167 per cent.

The winners of VfL’s 2023 Awards for Excellence in Vegetarian and Vegan Care Catering are:

Finally, the winner of The Beulah Charity Trust Special Recognition Award, presented by special guest, radio and TV presenter Wendy Turner Webster , is the HC-One Catering & Housekeeping Support Service Team, which was described as having “an unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older vegans and vegetarians.”

VfL chief executive Amanda Woodvine said: "It was really inspiring to hear the difference that people are making in care and hospital settings, and Vegetarian for Life’s honour to celebrate their achievements. We had a record number of entries for this year’s awards. One entrant even fought off competition to reach the finals not once but twice in the same category for his innovative vegan dishes. This is an outstanding achievement, and unheard of to date!"

Congratulations, then, to all the winners, and also to VfL for hosting such a friendly and fun event. Looking forward to next year’s awards already!

It was a delight to be there. Such an important cause and I'm fully behind it! Care homes MUST respect people's veggie/vegan dietary requirements and offer both choice and quality.

Thanks!! Medication accuracy is an essential aspect of a resident’s healthcare. In order to uphold the wellbeing and safety of residents, it is imperative that care providers implement proactive measures to decrease the likelihood of medication errors.
