From Dingo Digger to Industry Leaders: How Family Values Drive Success for Central Demolition

In 2002, Ian founded Central Demolition with nothing but a Dingo Digger and the determination to make it work. As the business grew, his son Michael joined the family business—starting from the ground up, just like Ian. From asbestos removal to labouring, truck driving to project management, Michael’s career journey has touched nearly every aspect of the company.

Today, Ian and Michael, backed by a strong leadership team, are not just leading Central Demolition—they're reshaping the demolition industry in New Zealand. Ian's relentless drive and "get it done" attitude have been at the heart of their success. As Michael puts it, "Ian will go to the ends of the earth for his clients. He holds himself fully accountable and doesn’t stop until the job is done."

Ian’s forward-thinking approach helped the company become a pioneer in asbestos removal and demolition waste recycling. But beyond the business, his vision has always been about creating a workplace where the team feels like family. The culture at Central Demolition is built on more than just hard work—it’s about community, support, and looking after the people who make it all happen.

Ian’s stepson, Marcus, has also been instrumental in the company’s growth. With a sales background, Marcus began by finding projects in the Bay of Plenty region, eventually expanding operations into Taranaki, Waikato, and Gisborne. “We’ve grown the regional teams to around 24 people,” Marcus explains. “Mike handles the Hawke’s Bay to Wellington regions, while I focus on areas North of that.”

When asked about working with Ian, Marcus emphasises the respect Ian has for his team. “Ian has respect and time for everyone. He’s always looking after the guys, which is how he’s earned so many awards. He treats everyone like extended family.”

Together, Ian, Michael, and Marcus continue to push Central Demolition forward, embracing innovation while staying true to the company's core values of hard work, community, and putting people first.
