From Digital Incrementalism to Exponential Transformation

Generative AI has now fully emerged as a novel and different catalyst for business transformation. This issue of Chronicles of Change explores the reasons behind this and why I think gen AI is going to be very different from recent innovations and more akin to the advent of the Internet itself.
Focus On: Embracing a Generative AI Reset
The journey to embedding gen AI's full potential begins with a fundamental organisational reset. This goes beyond tactical pilots, tests and siloed adoption but about embedding gen AI into the very core of business operations and strategy. This requires a structural evolution and an environment where innovation, deployment, and improvement of solutions can flourish at scale.
The Dichotomy of Early Wins and Long-term Value
While successful pilots are to be celebrated, the true measure of success lies in the sustainable integration of these technologies. This requires a push beyond one-off pilots, towards a comprehensive reengineering of business processes to support widespread digital and AI innovation.
For example, gen AI's role as a copilot in enhancing productivity is just the tip of the iceberg. The real game-changer lies in its ability to percolate throughout your business becoming a distinct competitive advantage. In order to do this, identifying and investing in areas where gen AI can amplify your organisation's strengths is crucial. This strategic alignment ensures that gen AI serves as a growth multiplier, rather than just a tool for efficiency.
The Upskilling Imperative
The evolution towards a gen AI-first business demands a people centered approach: even before we start talking tech, we need to ensure the workforce is equipped with the right skills. Not everyone needs to be a gen AI technical expert of course, but there needs to be a clear understanding on how gen AI works, what are the subsets of this technology (e.g. LLMs, image and video generation, etc.). This understanding will allow seamless integration of gen AI into strategic decision-making. Cultivating a culture of continuous learning and innovation will be key as well, given the extraordinary evolution pace.
Scaling with Foresight
Scaling gen AI solutions requires a robust foundation, built on scalable infrastructure and architecture. Prioritizing efficiency, sustainability, and the strategic use of existing technology resources will enable organizations to grow their gen AI initiatives without sacrificing performance or agility.
Data: The Cornerstone of Gen AI
Data has always been a key success factor for any transformation initiative but this becomes especially true with gen AI. Unstructured data, is at the heart of gen AI's potential, but it needs to be "prepared" in order to maximise quality outputs. This requires a meticulous approach to data management, focusing on quality, accessibility, and ethical considerations. I wrote about this a while back here and here.
Fostering Trust and Adoption: CEx Above All
The efficacy of gen AI technologies relies on acceptance and trust among users. One of the reasons gen AI is now mainstream news is because of ChatGPT, its merit was to deliver clear value (generating new content) through a simple customer experience (a natural language chat), similar to how the iPhone made smartphones mainstream.

Customer experience requires trustworthy, accurate, and user-friendly solutions that stick in the long term across both consumer and enterprise applications. This is why it is so important to focus on the whole value chain (data, build, CEx) to ensure sustained adoption.
To summarise, there are a few action points on how to embrace this era of exponential transformation:
1. Strategise for Integration and Adoption: Develop a comprehensive strategy that embeds gen AI into the core of your business processes. This involves not only technological adoption but also cultural and operational shifts to support innovation.
2. Prioritise Areas of Impact: Identify domains within your organization where gen AI can deliver significant value and competitive advantage. Focus your efforts on these areas to drive meaningful outcomes.
3. Invest in People: Upskilling your workforce to thrive in a gen AI-enhanced environment is non-negotiable. Create opportunities for continuous learning and development, emphasising the strategic application of gen AI technologies. For example, if you are not yet ready to launch an in-house LLM, encourage colleagues to try one of the freely available models and train them on prompt engineering, without of course exposing corporate data, so they will be ready once enterprise-approved solutions will be live.
4. Design for Scale and Efficiency: When developing gen AI solutions, prioritise scalable architecture and efficient use of technology. This ensures that your initiatives can grow without compromising performance.
5. Elevate Your Data Strategy: Recognise the critical role of data, particularly unstructured data, in powering gen AI solutions. Invest in robust data management practices that ensure quality, accessibility, and ethical use of data.
6. Build Trust Through Transparency: Develop gen AI solutions with a focus on transparency, accuracy, and user-friendliness. Trust among users is key to driving widespread adoption and leveraging the full potential of gen AI.
7. Embrace a Mindset of Continuous Evolution: The gen AI landscape is rapidly evolving. Stay agile, be prepared to pivot your strategies, and remain open to new opportunities and challenges that gen AI technologies present.
It is such an exciting time for those engaged in business transformation. While certain best practices remain similar to previous incremental innovations (identify real business issue, run pilot, measure, iterate, scale) others are new or assume a far bigger role: trust, training and CEx.
