Resilience Rooted in Family Legacy

Vop’s approach to leadership is deeply shaped by his family’s story of perseverance. His father, a Nigerian immigrant, pursued his dream of studying at 美国普渡大学 by boarding a cargo ship to the U.S. Meanwhile, his mother braved the challenges of the Nigerian Civil War and later returned to Indianapolis with her three children and just $700.

This legacy of grit and determination taught Vop to believe in dreams and remain resilient, no matter the obstacles. He often credits his parents’ sacrifices for the values that guide his leadership style today.

Driving Equity Through Public Service

With degrees in architecture and urban design, Vop has always viewed design as a way to advocate for communities. But for him, development goes beyond making things affordable—it’s about creating spaces that are sustainable, durable, and dignified.

“It’s not just about making something affordable,” Vop shared. “It’s about creating something that lasts—something that people can be proud of.”

His vision shows how design can be a powerful tool for equitable and meaningful urban development.

Public Service with Purpose

When Vop transitioned from design to public service, he brought his skills to tackling systemic inequities. Two of his key initiatives include:

  • Ban the Box: Removing criminal history questions from job applications to promote fairer hiring practices.
  • Senate Bill 46: Protecting long-term homeowners in rapidly developing areas from steep property tax hikes.

For Vop, public service means meeting challenges with both innovation and compassion. He reminds us that true leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives.

Collaboration Across Divides

A bipartisan approach is at the heart of Vop’s leadership. By focusing on resident needs over political divides, he ensures that local issues—like fixing potholes—get the attention they deserve.

“Potholes aren’t Republican or Democrat,” he pointed out. “They’re just resident needs.”

Through collaboration and inclusivity, Vop builds trust and ensures the community’s diverse voices are reflected in leadership decisions.

Advice for Aspiring Leaders

Vop encourages young leaders to pursue their passions and get involved in their communities. He believes Indianapolis, with its unique blend of connectivity and collaboration, offers countless opportunities to make a difference.

“In Indianapolis, we don’t have six degrees of separation—we have three. Show up, and you’ll be embraced,” he said, emphasizing the city’s welcoming nature and the importance of stepping forward to create change.
