Amid the heartfelt speeches and warm embraces at the DEB Loitokitok Alumni Association (DEBLAA) assembly, it became evident that this gathering was a tribute to the lasting influence of educators. The assembly highlighted the deep respect and gratitude alumni have for their former teachers, celebrating those who have left an unforgettable legacy. It was a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of educators like Dr. Kenny Matampash, whose work continues to inspire and transform lives.
Celebrating Legacy and Vision
Situated along the picturesque border of Kenya and Tanzania, DEB Loitokitok Primary School has been a cornerstone of learning since 1929. This institution has shaped numerous leaders across various fields. The recent DEB Loitokitok Alumni Association assembly not only celebrated this legacy but also underscored the importance of gratitude and recognition.
The Heartfelt Tribute to Dr. Kenny Matampash
A standout moment at the assembly was the honoring of Dr. Kenny Matampash, a distinguished former teacher of DEB Loitokitok Primary School. His tenure from May 1974 to June 1977 was marked by initiatives that fostered intellectual curiosity and encouraged students to pursue their dreams. He left the school to further his mission of socio-economic transformation among the Maasai people through ecologically balanced social justice programs and the preservation of traditional Maasai knowledge.
Bridging Tradition and Modernity
Dr. Matampash's journey did not end at DEB. He played pivotal roles in several social justice programs before founding the Neighbours Initiative Alliance (NIA) and the Oreteti Project. The NIA focuses on social justice for pastoralist communities, while the Oreteti Project aims to document and preserve vital Maasai oral traditions and botanical knowledge.
His lifelong goal has been to present traditional knowledge as rational, progressive, and sustainable. Dr. Matampash's efforts have earned him a Head of State Commendation (HSC) and a doctorate from Cape Town University in South Africa. DEB Loitokitok proudly claims him as one of its own, celebrating his achievements and his ability to blend traditional and modern educational practices
