From Data to Knowledge

From Data to Knowledge

For those of you that have worked with me, you know I’m a data person.  My engineering background has ingrained that in me I suppose.

Monitoring the upstream oil and gas market has been a particular focus and necessity during my past roles.  The pace of change in our industry has accelerated in recent years, with increasing volatility.  I believe volatility brings opportunity if you take the time to be informed.

Here are my favorite industry data sources to follow to "read the tea leaves" of market trends:

People on LinkedIn:

  • David Ramsden-Wood: he has a great podcast and uniquely blunt worldview presented through his Hot Take of the Day updates
  • Mark Rossano: he does a thorough podcast for Primary Vision Network that covers EIA weekly updates, OPEC+ changes, frac spread counts, etc.
  • David Blackmon: he publishes a Shale Daily Update and various articles for Forbes
  • Joshua Lock: he covers a little bit of everything related to the macro picture.  Very insightful and prolific posts.
  • Scott Galloway: irreverent take on technology, business, and education.  He has the Prof. G podcast and is on the Pivot podcast with Kara Swisher
  • Art Berman: fantastic detailed forecast of the US oil market based on data inputs
  • Gabriel Collins: covers the Permian water market and China, not sure how those two go together, but he does a good job with both.  Affiliated with Rice University.

My favorite industry news sources:

  • SPE: highly generalized (and sometimes boring), but comprehensive with their magazine and email updates
  • McKinsey Energy Insights: short weekly summary newsletter. Sign up here: https://clientlink.secure.force.com/EnergyInsightsSignup
  • Spears & Associates: they have a podcast called The Drilldown and the Insights newsletter.  Not always accurate, but consistently insightful takes on the macro oil market.
  • Oilfield Water Connection: great newsletter with some hidden gems of info on the US water market
  • Sourcewater: a particularly good data platform for US upstream produced water
  • B3 Insights: I haven’t used this platform, but their LinkedIn feed has good summaries of US upstream water market trends

Hope this helps everyone navigate this crazy market!
