From Data to Deployment: Navigating the IT Infrastructure Maze

Inventory, SSoT, and the Power of Runbooks. While inventory and SSoT provide the foundation for comprehension, runbooks are the instruments of action, meticulously crafting the blueprints for successful deployments and transformations.

In today's complex IT landscape, maintaining a comprehensive and accurate inventory of configuration items (CIs) is essential for effective infrastructure management. A single source of truth (SSoT) for CI data provides a centralized repository that can be used to generate runbooks, automate tasks, and improve decision-making.

A typical SSoT will include a wide range of information about each CI, such as:

  • Hostname
  • FQDN
  • IP address
  • Subnet
  • Disk size
  • Consumed disk size
  • Type of application hosted
  • Database
  • Database size
  • Backup details
  • Backup schedule
  • Physical location details
  • Application vendor name
  • Application manager
  • Application owner

This information can be used to create runbooks that provide step-by-step instructions for performing a wide range of tasks, such as:

  • Deploying applications
  • Configuring servers
  • Troubleshooting problems
  • Performing maintenance
  • Decommissioning CIs

Runbooks are typically divided into three sections:

  • Current state of operation
  • Interim state of operation
  • Future state of operation

The current state of operation section describes the CI as it is currently configured. The interim state of operation section describes the changes that will be made to the CI during the course of the task. The future state of operation section describes the CI as it will be configured after the task is complete.

Once a runbook is complete, it is validated by the appropriate stakeholders, such as architects, operations teams, and asset/application owners. Once the runbook is approved, procurement and build activities can begin. This may include purchasing hardware, installing software, and configuring network and security settings.

Once the infrastructure is ready, a deployment date is scheduled. A change window is planned, and if necessary, downtime is negotiated and agreed upon.

By using an SSoT to generate runbooks, organizations can ensure that tasks are performed consistently and accurately. Runbooks can also help to reduce the risk of human error and improve the overall efficiency of IT operations.

In addition to the benefits listed above, runbooks can also be used to:

  • Improve communication and collaboration between IT teams.
  • Reduce the time it takes to complete tasks.
  • Improve the quality of IT services.
  • Reduce the risk of outages.
  • Improve compliance with IT policies and procedures.

Collaboration and Validation

The creation of a Runbook is a collaborative effort. It involves architects, operations teams, and asset/application owners who bring their expertise to the table. This multi-perspective approach ensures that the Runbook is well-rounded and comprehensive.

From Plan to Deployment

As the Runbook is reviewed and approved by all parties, the groundwork for infrastructure changes begins. Procurement and the building of hardware and services commence. This includes network planning, server setups, configuring switches, routers, and ensuring firewall security. The goal is to ensure a seamless transition from the current state to the future state.
