HOW TO HIRE MARKETERS?

The critical layer that drives SCALE!

?

ARTICLE ONE: HIRING (REAL) MARKETERS

Here's a series on "How to hire marketers." I am sure you will find some answers and raise more questions and experiences.

Join me in this journey by participating in the discussion and engaging with counter viewpoints!

Hiring (real) marketers.

This is a problem I continue to grapple with.?

And so I search, research, interview, read, and experiment.?

Here are some of my perspectives, all attempted in real life.?

?

Will it work for you??

I would not know that. I can only share what has worked directly for me or the clients I consult and help hire strategic marketers.

Knowing something in the right direction and doing something in that direction, however small, will help.

This writing series on hiring marketers is one such direction that works for me and my tribe of Growth CxOs.

Comments. Experiments. Results. Stories. Processes. Framework.

This series is an output from my heart, my practical experiences, and my brain :)

How to hire strategic marketers?

Here's the story of Anand.

Design by @Arun Ramkumar

Anand is the CEO of a million-dollar company, but he is absolutely frustrated. He is pissed off with himself, frustrated with everything that is happening around him.?

He wants scale, he wants growth; as a start-up, he has brought his company to the million-dollar mark, but for the last couple of years, he has been stuck there. Anand is unable to move or go beyond this plateau.

Some of you may have had weight loss challenges. You drop some weight; and then you get stuck at a particular place.

Anand did not know what to do. He knew he wanted growth, he wanted scale, but whichever way he looked, he could not get the right candidate for his strategic marketing division head.?

He searched hard and long and why; either the candidates were not coming, or if the candidate came in, the resume and the person did not have a match. And if there was a match, they fell in love, negotiated, worked everything through, and an offer given, but that person never joined.?

This article series is for the Anands in this audience. Those growth-stage CEOs who have similar frustrations as Anand and I.?

Those who want to grow, who want to scale, who want to hire the right strategic marketer.

This article series is for those CEOs and leaders who know the magic words, "I don't know".

It is for those CEOs who realize, "I know what I know, I absolutely know what I don't know".

It is for those CEOs who are not micro-managers, who do not want everybody to come to them for approval for every single coma, full stop, or hyphen.

If you are a growth stage leader like me, does the following passage resonate with you?

"I want growth. Ok. This is a generic statement and serves no specific purpose or action. What is growth? Why? How? What's the map?"

There needs to be a conversion. From the amorphous and the vague to something more tangible and understandable.

As a leader, you have an idea, a thought, and a vision. It is clear in your mind. Another person cannot look into your brain.

What's there has to be put down in a format that can be communicated, understood, transmitted, and acted upon.

Otherwise, it will lead to frustration that the team does not understand what I want!!! When I have clarity, and I document the same by voice or word, then it can be transmitted. If the understanding is not clear, it is my problem, not theirs. I will rework my document.

In our quest for growth, we need marketing, which is the foundation of our company. Every single person in the company is a marketer working towards growth. Together.

If this resonates with you, shout, scream, comment, question, engage.

What is your experience? What worked? What did not?

The next article in the series will talk about a key question.

"Why do you want a marketer?"

Thats a question , I think , every entrepreneur, founder or even a CXO dwells on. But I guess the answer is still hazy. We often talk about growth but hardly we quantify growth and timeline to achieve it. I think unless we are clear about it, it would be hard ro answer the question of what to look for in a marketer.
