From cubicles to community: Reimagining the workplace for connection and creativity

NOW: Even before the pandemic, office usage was declining due to mobile technology. The pandemic accelerated this shift significantly.

BUT: Employees prefer to return to the office for interpersonal experiences and focused work, but traditional office designs fail to meet these needs. Office layouts have emphasised hierarchy and supervision, which can alienate employees.

NEW: The return-to-office discussion emphasises the need for culture and connection. Community spaces like cafes, libraries, and parks offer valuable lessons for designing engaging and functional office environments.

SO: To improve physical workplaces and urban areas, offices must support connection, flexible work, and collaboration, providing greater value: an "office landscaping" approach. Redesigned offices can often be smaller, more efficient, and reinvest real estate savings into creating lively, desirable spaces.
