From Conversations to Confidence: How Networking is Shaping My Career Journey
They say networking is where opportunities begin, but for much of this semester, I stood at the edge, unsure how to take the first step. I attended inspiring guest lectures, met accomplished professionals, and heard stories that sparked ideas. Yet, I often hesitated to reach out or follow up, wondering if I was ready. This blog is a reflection of those tentative steps, the lessons learned along the way, and the moments that helped me turn hesitation into action. If you’ve ever felt unsure about networking, this is for you—a guide through the highs, the hurdles, and the small wins that make the journey worthwhile.
What I Learned: Insights That Changed My Perspective
The Digital Marketing Seminar featured an array of guest speakers, each bringing unique insights from diverse industries and backgrounds. Each session offered a unique lens into the evolving world of marketing, but two speakers, in particular, left a lasting impression.
Christy’s session on Tangerine’s Content Supply Chain (CSC) was an eye-opener. She broke down how Tangerine blends automation with human creativity to deliver personalized, scalable content. As someone who’s often felt intimidated by technology, her explanation of balancing tech and the human touch inspired me to rethink my own approach. It was a push to stop viewing technology as a hurdle and start seeing it as an ally in this rapidly evolving field.
Cathy’s advice was a masterclass in embracing risk. Her words—“Don’t wait for the perfect moment; create it”—resonated deeply. They made me reflect on opportunities I’d hesitated to pursue, simply because I wasn’t sure I was ready. Cathy’s perspective reminded me that stepping out of my comfort zone is where growth truly happens.
Michael Hatswell, an Assistant Media Buyer/Planner at EssenceMediacom, provided practical insights into job-seeking strategies, audience targeting techniques, and teamwork. His tips, such as leveraging LinkedIn for meaningful connections and focusing on psychographics in campaign strategies, were actionable takeaways that I’ve already begun applying.
All the speakers challenged me to rethink my assumptions and inspired me to take a more proactive role in shaping my career path.
Building Bridges: My Networking Journey
Connections That Shaped Me
Networking is more than collecting contacts—it’s about building meaningful relationships. I had the privilege of connecting with, a friend and mentor Sharmin from Publicis Media who has more than five years of experience in Canadian marketing. Sharmin’s guidance has been invaluable. She not only introduced me to platforms like Monday Girl, which connects women with inspiring women mentors, but also shared advice on how I can improve my communication and knowledge through short, impactful reads.
I also connected with Faye Lau , a classmate with rich experience in the marketing industry. Her journey to securing a co-op at Bahn Thai Spa: Traditional Thai Massage and Wellness Centre was incredibly insightful. From discussing her interview preparation to hearing how she projected confidence, Faye’s story motivated me to refine my approach to job applications.
