As video game franchises expand into the world of film and television, some adaptations have managed to strike gold, translating beloved characters and storylines onto the big and small screens with success.
Here are my top 3 video game adaptations that not only captivated gamers but also pulled in wider audiences.
1. The Last of Us (HBO) - 2023
With a story-driven foundation already in place, The Last of Us made its leap to television with overwhelming success. The series masterfully translated the emotionally charged journey of Joel and Ellie from the screen of a PlayStation console into one of the most gripping shows of 2023.
The tension, the character dynamics, and the deeply human moments are what elevate The Last of Us beyond just a post-apocalyptic narrative. Its success lies in staying true to the game’s core, while exploring new character developments that add depth and intrigue for both new viewers and seasoned fans of the franchise.
What Makes It Unique: The blend of faithful adaptation with additional character depth, alongside performances by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, elevates this series beyond typical adaptations. It balances emotional storytelling with action, making it not just a successful adaptation, but a standout drama.
2. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - 2023
The Mario franchise is perhaps the most recognizable name in gaming history, and 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie delivered a colorful, nostalgia-packed experience for audiences of all ages. Unlike some game adaptations that lean into dark and gritty tones, this film embraced its fun, light-hearted roots. From iconic settings like Peach's Castle to Mario's endless chase through Rainbow Road, the movie was packed with Easter eggs for fans and enough adventure to captivate newcomers.
While the plot may be simple, the charm and nostalgia-driven references, along with stunning visuals, ensure that the Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like a love letter to the world of Nintendo.
What Makes It Unique: The movie's vibrant tone and playful energy, combined with nostalgic nods to the games, set it apart. Small moments like the quirky "Peaches" song only add to the film's light-hearted charm, making it a fun ride for fans of all ages.
3. Resident Evil - 2002
Resident Evil (2002) is a sci-fi horror film that marked the start of a long-running movie series, blending action, horror, and zombie lore. Loosely based on the iconic Capcom video game franchise, the film follows Alice (played by Milla Jovovich) as she navigates an underground facility where a viral outbreak has turned employees into bloodthirsty zombies. Along with a special forces team, Alice must battle both the infected and the deadly artificial intelligence known as the Red Queen.

Though it diverges from the game’s plot, Resident Evil managed to capture the survival horror atmosphere, offering a mix of tension, action, and terrifying creatures. Its success led to a franchise of sequels that continued to explore the post-apocalyptic world and introduced new dangers.
What Makes It Unique: The film’s balance of high-octane action and horror, along with Milla Jovovich’s portrayal of Alice, helped establish Resident Evil as one of the most successful video game adaptations. Its unique take on the game's lore allowed it to stand on its own as a thrilling, sci-fi horror experience.
These adaptations are prime examples of how video game franchises can successfully transition into mainstream media. Whether staying true to the game’s roots or offering fresh takes, they’ve all managed to carve their own place in entertainment.
Beyond these successful adaptations, there are still some game franchises I would love to see brought to life on the screen.
Bonus: Franchises I’d Love to See on Screen
There are a few iconic video game franchises that I would love to see brought to the screen.
First, Baldur's Gate, the beloved RPG series steeped in the rich lore of Dungeons & Dragons, would make for an epic high-fantasy series filled with intricate character dynamics, complex storylines, and magical battles. While the world of Dungeons & Dragons has been adapted into various films and series, Baldur’s Gate specifically hasn’t received a direct adaptation yet.
Next, Alan Wake, the psychological horror game, stands out with its eerie atmosphere and dark narrative, making it a prime candidate for adaptation into other media. Its blend of mystery, supernatural elements, and intense storytelling would perfectly lend itself to a gripping thriller in any format. With a protagonist who battles not just physical enemies but his own mind, the game’s psychological depth and tension-filled world would captivate audiences seeking suspense and atmospheric horror.
Lastly, Watch Dogs, the open-world hacking adventure, has already wrapped up filming in 2024. Though plot details remain under wraps, it’s exciting to know that the project is moving forward. Fans can look forward to a tech-thriller rooted in the game’s signature themes of surveillance, hacking, and the fight against powerful systems. This adaptation promises to bring the high-stakes, action-packed world of Watch Dogs to life in a fresh and thrilling way, appealing to both gamers and new audiences alike.
As video game adaptations continue to evolve, it's clear that these beloved franchises have the power to engage both fans and newcomers alike. Whether it's the emotional depth of The Last of Us, the nostalgic fun of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, or the action-packed horror of Resident Evil, these films and shows are proving that video games can successfully transcend mediums. With the potential for other games like Baldur's Gate, Alan Wake, and Watch Dogs to join the ranks, the future of video game adaptations looks brighter than ever.
Now, I’d love to hear from you—what’s your favorite video game adaptation? Or is there a game franchise you’re excited to see brought to life on screen?

5 个月La serie Fallout capture vraiment bien l’univers des jeux. Et aussi Edge Runner ( serie anime dans l’univers Cyberpunk 2077) et Arcane la serie d’animation dans l’univers de League of Legends ??
Video game adaptations can be hit or miss. "The Last of Us" really nailed the emotional depth, though. What’s your take?
