From Complex to Simple: The Bridging Function Makes GNSS Module Operations Smarter

In this blog, we’ll explore the GNSS Bridging Function.

In the past, users had to manage GNSS and radio modules separately. Today, we’ll discuss how the "Bridging Function" simplifies this process.

??1?What is GNSS “Bridging Function” ?

The “Bridging Function” is a common feature in GNSS modules or devices. Its primary function is to directly pass commands or data to external devices (such as radio modules) connected to the GNSS module's serial port, without parsing or modifying the data. The main functions of this feature include:

? 2?Advantages

1) Remote Configuration of Radio Modules

Users can send commands through the GNSS module’s serial port to configure parameters of the radio module, such as frequency, power, channels, etc., without needing to connect a separate computer or device to the radio module. This reduces the complexity of device connections in actual operations.

?

2) Simplified Communication Link

The function makes communication between the GNSS module and the radio module more seamless. Users do not need to worry about protocol conversion; they simply need to follow the command format of the radio module. This method is suitable for various scenarios, such as adjusting radio module parameters during RTK data transmission.

?

3) Enhanced System Integration

In integrated devices (such as GNSS receivers or RTK equipment), “Bridge” data transmission through the GNSS module’s serial port can reduce the need for additional hardware interfaces, improving the system's integration and compactness.

?

4) Remote Diagnostics and Maintenance

If a radio module encounters issues or needs parameter adjustments, commands can be sent through the GNSS module’s serial port for remote configuration, allowing quick debugging and avoiding the hassle of disassembling the device.

2) Specific Steps

Step 1: Connect the GNSS module to the Radio module via the serial port, as shown in above photo, the GNSS COM3 connected with Radio COM1, and GNSS COM1 is connected to computer.

Step 2: Enable the “Bridging Function” of GNSS and Radio with command “Bridge on 1 3”. The GNSS module transparently passes the command to the radio module to complete the configuration and print the back message to GNSS com1.

1. Forward the data received from COM1 to COM3 for output. (If a radio is connected to COM3, it will send the data to the radio.) ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

2. Forward the data received from COM3 to COM1 for output. (If a radio is connected to COM3, the radio will send feedback through COM1.)?

3. When forwarding data from COM1, instruction detection is supported, while COM3 no longer supports instruction detection.?

? 4?Conclusion

With add “Bridging Function” functionality into GNSS systems simplifies operations by reducing the need for multiple connections and streamlining configurations. This feature enhances user experience by making equipment management more efficient, faster, and reliable. Whether for navigation, tracking, or communication, it allows seamless configuration of GNSS and radio modules through a single connection, eliminating the complexities of traditional setups and improving overall efficiency.
