Favourite aspects of Esher College?
'Esher College ingrained a culture of self-sufficiency from the outset. Whilst tutors at Esher provided the necessary guidance to learn and develop, it was my individual desire to succeed and take responsibility for my own pathway which helped me adapt easily to the demands of University life. I was fortunate enough to have a great tutor who instilled confidence and pushed me to continue developing academically, alongside pursuing my sporting aspirations. The sporting facilities at Esher widened my skill set, and helped to develop team-working and many other transferable skills which would become incredibly useful for me in the working world. I spent 2 years playing first team football at Esher, which provided me with ample opportunity to nurture my abilities and to continue to develop my competitive edge!'
What did I focus on when looking at Universities?
'I decided to make my decision independently, and tried to not to make a decision based upon friends' decisions. I focused on personal factors that were important to me, such as sporting facilities, checking out the campus buildings where I would be studying, and exploring the green space around campuses. I attended open days where possible, interacted with as many current students, and began to create a shortlist of options that were feasible, and encouraged me to work hard to meet entry requirements'. I attended the University of Sussex, which is one of the only universities that sits within a National Park, which meant I had plenty of space to explore, exercise and clear my head when necessary'.
How have you adapted to our new way of working remotely?
'I found that striking the right balance has been essential. I have spent time away from my desk/computer screen to focus my mind elsewhere. For me this has been running and also strength & conditioning exercises. Taking short breaks throughout work has helped to improve my concentration and self-motivation levels. I have switched around my working environment, and even managed some work in the garden when the weather has been good. I have ensured to keep regular contact with my colleagues through regular video conferencing, which has helped to counteract the lack of office 'small-talk' which I think is always important'.
What advice would you give your former 17 year old self?
'I remember feeling anxious and nervous about my career path, and where I would end up, so I would definitely tell myself not worry if I am anxious or uncertain of the career path going forwards. Other people will already have their plans in place, but I needed to remind myself to focus on me, and avoid the distractions around me. If I had another opportunity I would try and keep my options as wide open as possible, be open to new ideas/experiences, connect with new people, and develop my network, as I have seen lots of my successful peers gain success by doing these.'
I would tell myself to always find time to partake in activities outside of academia that I enjoy to relieve stress and tension, as the time to do this would become slightly more limited in the future.
What are your plans for the future?
'Having previously had no experience in the Built Environment sector, I have really immersed myself in this industry. I want to progress my career within the Property sector with a company that is the right fit for me, and gain the relevant qualifications that I may require to widen my skill set. I am about to begin working towards my qualifications within the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), which will benefit me enormously, as I work towards the next steps in my career'. I am also a Level 2 qualified fitness instructor, so in my spare time, I am working towards my Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications. I still enjoy playing football on the weekends, for Battersea Dogs FC, not to be confused with the animal shelter!'
What are the benefits of SME's?
'Being a team member in an SME-sized business is a unique experience, and is one that should never be overlooked. Being at Chapman Consulting (An SME-sized sales & marketing agency, operating in the built environment) has given me exposure to all levels of the business. We are treated as equals, and it is also an incredibly rewarding sensation to know that your input of work goes a long way in enhancing the reputation and growth of the business. Having previously worked at large agencies, I had often felt like a small cog in a big machine, but being at an SME has eradicated this feeling."
