From Circle City to The Triangle

From Circle City to The Triangle

“Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." - George Bernard Shaw

Actually, I believe it’s a little of both. To create a masterpiece one must first take stock of what paint colors are already available and try different blends of those colors to create new.

I recently intentionally transitioned out of my leadership role at United Way of Central Indiana and carved out some time for personal renewal and professional discovery. Taking this approach allowed me to best identify where my energy is and what problems I’d like to help solve next.

At this time I’m convinced my highest level of personal energy is around gaining the experience of living outside of Indianapolis, after 43 years here. My wife and I love Indy but I’ve been increasingly eager to try a different blend of life’s colors. For a variety of reasons we’ve identified the Raleigh-Durham area as our preferred destination and I’m now focused on seeking opportunities there.

Professionally, there are a lot of jobs I know can do. At this point I’m searching for a problem I’m uniquely qualified to solve. My recipe for the perfect opportunity would consist of these core ingredients:

  • A socially meaningful purpose; most likely a for-profit social enterprise
  • An executive leadership role with a balance of internal and external responsibilities and accountability for organizational clarity, culture and strategy
  • An organization small enough for me to make a meaningful impact and know everyone by name, yet large enough to strive for scalable outcomes
  • A culture that embraces curiosity and empowerment, where I can build a grow a team

That said, I know my curiosity, diverse interests and tendency to chase change will keep me open to other exciting opportunities. Reflecting on my career to date has reminded me that I’m at my best when I’m discovering and I consistently rise to the occasion whenever I’m in new and bigger situations.

I couldn’t be more excited to start this next chapter. And I look forward to sharing more of what I learn along the way. In the meantime, if you know anyone in The Triangle area I should meet, feel free to message me directly.

Thanks for reading! Make it a meaningful day!
