From Chemical Engineering to Project Management and Beyond - A Senior Manager’s Perspective

Dear BIVILLEPM Community,

I recently had a conversation with a Barrister friend who claims that Nigeria does not respect intellectual property and services. He mentioned spending the last year living "hand-to-mouth" and expressed his desire to venture into importation and real estate business this year, making his legal practice part-time for high-profile cases while focusing on his new business as a career.

His situation mirrors many frustrated by the system, seeking to pivot to a different path. After completing an OND in Chemical Engineering, I faced challenges in Ikeja's job market, eventually finding success in a paint factory and freelancing as an O’Level science teacher. Subsequently, I worked as a Process Engineer Intern.

Even before obtaining a B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering, I was tired of roaming the streets and literally begging for experience. That's why I changed my path while in 2nd college (FUTO), replacing Colson’s and Richardson Chemical Engineering Vol. 1-6 with Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep and Microsoft Project for Dummies. I moved all the Chemical Engineering books I have labored to study to my village, especially when I learned that API Standards are preferred to university textbooks for Design and Operations.

Only after achieving some success in Project Management as a Senior Planning Engineer did I contemplate reviving my Chemical Engineering license. Specializing in Project Management and Oracle Primavera, I realized Chemical Engineering wasn't viable without these (This is my opinion and it might not be the same with everyone else). When client acquisition became tough, I obtained and utilized my MBA aiming for a Senior Manager position, offering integrated services.

My MBA Small Business Management course categorized businesses into:

  1. Services,
  2. Manufacturing, and
  3. Trading.

I chose to engage in the services business with #BIZVILLEPM due to my experience with starting with sweat equity and low capital. I'm open to manufacturing and trading (which includes importation business) when the right Capital/Partners or the right Manufacturing Contract in the form of "Fabrication" comes. ????

No career follows a straight line so also are our paths to success. On this note, I will differ from your statement that says chemical engineering was not viable. In my opinion, it's one of the best engineering disciplines with limitless opportunities. I studied chemical engineering by accident and must say that it has given me several opportunities. Chemical Engineering is at the heart of the whole discussion about sustainable energy production, digitalization, environmental protection and. climate change.
