The MOS Maturity Model - At What Stage Is Your Organization?
There are four distinct stages in the maturity model of a Management Operating System (MOS).
In the absence of an MOS, teams grapple with reactive management, working on the immediate crises rather than fixing the underlying problems. This Reactive Response stage, or Fire-Fighting stage is defined by high activity but low strategic direction, which leads to a sense of helplessness and employees become disenchanted. Organizations in this stage are ill-equipped to improve their performance until they invest in establishing an MOS. Quite frequently, employees become heroes by rescuing the day and this culture permeates the organization. Heroes hoard their knowledge, and the organization continues to suffer. Good people leave, and the organization is habitually operating poorly.
The next stage is called the Stabilization stage, where teams begin to address challenges with some consistency. Processes exist but improvement is stagnant. Growth is halted and this is commonly referred to as the Treading Water stage.
The Progressive Enhancement stage reflects a turn toward small, incremental improvements. Teams establish processes and pursue goals with greater intent, though they must guard against becoming complacent and halting further improvement.
Finally, organizations ascend to Transformational Performance, a stage where exceptional and consistent improvements are the norm. Here, teams challenge the status quo, continuously innovate, and set new benchmarks, fully owning their roles in driving organizational performance. The top ten percent of organizations are at this stage.
Understanding these stages enables organizations to identify where they stand and determine their next moves toward Transformational Performance.
