From Chaos to Calm -7 days to civility and resolution.

Incivility in local government is on the rise, posing significant challenges to effective governance, community trust, and Councillor well-being. Whether it’s in council meetings, public debates, or behind closed doors, disrespectful behavior and a lack of constructive communication can lead to strained relationships, reduced collaboration, and decisions made under tension rather than clarity.

Recognizing this growing concern, I’m excited to announce the 7-Day Civility Challenge, launching January 20th. This initiative aims to equip Councillors with practical tools to manage conflict, improve negotiation skills, and create a culture of mutual respect and understanding. By dedicating just a few minutes each day to civility-focused actions, participants can make meaningful strides in enhancing their personal and professional lives while fostering healthier working relationships.

Why Civility is essential in Local Government

Civility goes beyond mere politeness. It’s about fostering an environment where diverse opinions are respected, disagreements are handled constructively, and collaboration is prioritized over competition. In local government, civility is not a luxury—it’s a necessity.

Here’s why:

  • Promotes effective decision-making: Civil environments encourage the open exchange of ideas, enabling Councillors to consider all perspectives before reaching informed decisions.
  • Strengthens relationships: Mutual respect builds trust among colleagues, staff, and the public, creating a foundation for long-term collaboration.
  • Supports community trust: When constituents see their leaders engaging respectfully, even in disagreement, it reinforces their faith in the democratic process.
  • Improves well-being: Working in a respectful environment reduces stress, mitigates burnout, and enhances job satisfaction.

On the other hand, incivility creates a ripple effect, escalating tensions, undermining cooperation, and leaving leaders emotionally drained.

Small steps toward significant change

The 7-Day Civility Challenge is based on the principle that small, consistent actions can lead to profound transformations. Each day, participants will focus on a single actionable step designed to build their capacity for civility, from practicing empathy to managing emotional responses during conflict.

These steps aren’t about perfection but about progress. They encourage self-reflection and provide practical tools to help Councillors navigate even the most challenging situations with greater confidence and clarity.

For instance:

  • Taking a moment to listen without interrupting can defuse heated discussions.
  • Expressing gratitude to colleagues can rebuild bridges after a disagreement.
  • Framing conflicts as opportunities for growth can shift the dynamic from adversarial to collaborative.

Over time, these small shifts can help reshape the culture within local governments, leading to more productive conversations, stronger decisions, and a renewed sense of purpose.

The connection between civility and well-being

One often overlooked consequence of incivility is its impact on well-being. Constant exposure to negativity can lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout, ultimately affecting both personal health and professional performance.

Conversely, fostering civility doesn’t just benefit relationships—it also supports individual well-being. Leaders who prioritize respectful interactions experience:

  • Reduced stress: Civil conversations lower the emotional toll of disagreements.
  • Improved focus: A positive environment allows leaders to concentrate on their goals.
  • Greater satisfaction: Feeling respected and valued enhances job fulfillment.

By participating in the Civility Challenge, you’re not only investing in your leadership skills but also in your overall well-being.
