From Challenges to Change: Reviving Livelihoods in Gopalpur
In Tata Colony, Gopalpur, an incense stick unit established in 2014 was once a source of livelihood and pride for the community. Equipped with 30 manual machines, the unit supported many families and created a sense of hope. However, as technology advanced, manual machines could no longer meet the demands of traders, and the unit shut down in 2019. This closure left the community without a crucial source of income and opportunity.
In 2023, efforts began to bring the unit back to life. But it needed more than just restarting operations. The focus shifted to creating a sustainable enterprise that could adapt to modern production standards and provide long-term benefits to the community.
The Path to Revival
The first step was identifying the core issues: outdated manual machines and the need for a new group of skilled operators. The key was modernization, community involvement, and skill development.
1. Upgraded Equipment: Four semi-automatic machines replaced the old manual ones, increasing efficiency and production capacity. These machines allowed for larger volumes of incense sticks to be produced, meeting the market’s demands effectively.
2. Community Involvement: The community’s participation was at the heart of the revival. Local women, especially members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), were encouraged to take part in this initiative. Ten members from the community joined the unit, taking on roles that gave them financial independence and a sense of empowerment.
3. Training and Skill Building: Comprehensive training programs were conducted to equip the new operators with the skills needed to manage the semi-automatic machines. This ensured that the unit could run smoothly and meet production goals.

4. Establishing Market Linkages: Efforts were made to connect the unit with traders and markets, ensuring a steady demand for the incense sticks. This step secured the unit’s long-term sustainability and profitability.
The Impact
The revival of the incense stick unit has brought significant changes to the community. Today, the unit produces 600-700 kilograms of incense sticks every month—a remarkable improvement compared to earlier times.
The initiative has created sustainable livelihoods for 10 community members, many of whom are women. For these women, this opportunity has meant more than just income. It has been a pathway to economic independence, increased confidence, and a brighter future for their families.
A Sustainable Future
The incense stick unit is now on a path to becoming a sustainable enterprise. With continued efforts to strengthen market connections and improve operations, it holds the promise of steady growth. For the community, it is a symbol of resilience and a reminder of what can be achieved when challenges are met with determination and collaboration.
This story of revival highlights the transformative power of technology and the strength of communities working together to overcome challenges.
