From C-Suite Leadership to Community Transformation: Meet Nkanta Hines, GlobalMindED Board Member

We are proud to highlight Black voices in honor of Black History month. Meet Nkanta Hines, an ally, leader, and champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion and GlobalMindED Board member. With over 25 years of experience in leadership roles across healthcare, research, and biotechnology, Nkanta has dedicated his career to empowering others and fostering inclusive environments.

Tell us about your personal story.

I am a proud native of central Virginia, where I grew up as the eldest of three boys in a family shaped by both education and hard work. My father was a construction worker, and my mother was an educator, which fostered in me a deep appreciation for learning and perseverance. After completing my K-12 education and pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees, I embarked on a career that blends education, research, and biotechnology.

My professional journey began in the research division of a Fortune 500 company, where I honed my leadership abilities and explored my intellectual curiosity in science, organizational development, and healthcare. As my career progressed, I moved into healthcare, driven by a passion for health equity and addressing the social determinants of health. I believe healthcare touches everyone throughout their life, and being part of that system has been both rewarding and humbling. My faith, family (I’m happily married with twin sixteen-year-old children), and the desire to give back are the core pillars that guide both my personal and professional life.

What pivotal experiences shaped your current path?

Several key experiences have shaped my journey. My college mentors were instrumental in helping me recognize my strengths in science and technology, encouraging me to pursue opportunities that aligned with my passions. Being given the chance to learn, explore, and challenge the status quo has been vital in shaping my personal and professional growth.

Along the way, I’ve made significant geographical and industrial shifts, each motivated by opportunities to expand my impact. The support of my network and advisors has played a crucial role in giving me the courage to embrace new challenges. One of the most defining moments was the loss of my father in 2017. His passing reminded me of the importance of being present for my family. As the oldest son and now a father myself, I’ve come to cherish the limited time we have and place a stronger emphasis on being there for those who matter most.

What are the most valuable lessons you've learned about yourself through your life and career?

I’ve learned several key lessons that guide my life and career:

How you do anything is how you do everything. I believe in applying excellence in all areas of life, big or small.

History may not repeat itself, but it often rhymes. I’ve seen patterns in my personal and professional life that have taught me to approach challenges with an understanding of history.

When you’ve found your purpose, everything else falls into place. Discovering my calling has brought a sense of clarity and direction, allowing my actions to align with my deeper values.

What drives your desire to contribute and make a difference?

I am driven by a sense of purpose to help others—just as I have been helped by so many remarkable people. Throughout my journey, I’ve been given second chances, and I’ve seen firsthand how impactful it can be to extend that same generosity to others. My passions lie in healthcare, equity, education, and preparing future generations for success. These areas naturally align with my desire to make a meaningful difference, and I believe it’s crucial to give back in ways that help others reach their full potential, just as I’ve been supported along my path.

What is the highest goal you have as an ally leader and role model?

The highest goal I have as an ally leader is to impact as many students, young professionals, and community learners as possible—especially those who aspire to create change through equity and inclusion. My mission is to inspire individuals who, regardless of their background, strive to build a more inclusive world. It’s my hope to leave a legacy that challenges societal norms and creates space for all voices, regardless of status or circumstance.

How can GlobalMindED help you achieve your goals as an ally and overall as an inclusive leader?

GlobalMindED’s mission deeply resonates with my personal passions, and I see many synergies between our values. Inclusive leadership is about fostering appreciation for differences, advocating for systemic change, and ensuring diverse perspectives are incorporated into all levels of decision-making. GlobalMindED offers an ideal platform for this kind of work, and I believe we can achieve great things together. By partnering with GlobalMindED, I can further my commitment to leadership that is grounded in equity, diversity, and inclusion—ensuring that all individuals have opportunities for growth, regardless of their background.
