How I lead project to success
Dmytro Nizhebetskyi
I help ambitious IT project managers connect the dots between theory and practice.
Project goals are like a shooting target. In the center, we have the bullseye. At the start of the project, that’s our focus: To get the highest score.
However, an IT project can be successful even if you hit one or two circles beyond the bullseye.
So, in real life, the project goal is never a single point. Instead, it's a range of possible outcomes that will satisfy the clients, sponsors, and stakeholders.
Think about any application or service you use. You can create a huge variety of features and capabilities, a combination of which produces something that is capable of achieving the ultimate business goal.?
That's why it's critical that we also set boundaries for the project. How do we do that?
First of all, we need to clearly specify the tangible results needed for the project to qualify as a success.?
For example, do we just need to create the product or service? Or are supplementary educational materials needed as well, like a user manual, instructional videos, etc.? Or do you need to support the product when it goes to market?
These can be a part of the overall project or a separate set of projects. In any case, you need a mutual understanding of the desired end result.?
Next, it's equally important to know what is not a part of the project.?
For example, you run a project that develops a professional social network that will be a competitor to LinkedIn. We aim to get a market share.
Who would collect requirements for features of this product? It's a considerable amount of work.
You need to conduct thorough research to understand what requirements will help you make a superior product.
So, is this a part of the project? Or does the client already have these requirements? If it's not a part of the project, you need to make this clear.

Who will create designs and user experience diagrams for the product? Is this a part of this project? Your clients probably don't have the necessary expertise, in which case it will be a part of the project.?
Notice that each part requires different expertise. In addition to actual software development, you may need graphic designers, technical writers, video editors, etc.?You may not have this expertise available in your company. So, to avoid serious problems, you need to state explicitly what is excluded from the project scope.
Conversely, you will have certain expertise at your disposal within the company. This will define the boundaries of which technologies, tools, materials, and vendors you work with.
Sometimes, your management (not clients) will want you to go beyond these boundaries, which will mean a bigger allocated budget or higher profit from the project. Just keep in mind that, without proper planning and realistic assessment of your expertise, serious risks will be introduced.
