From Boot Camp to Corporate: The Value of Professional Development in the Workforce
The corporate world has historically looked to the military for models on leading groups of people effectively, and understandably so: The military teaches essential leadership traits, such as accountability, adaptability, dedication, and integrity. But what is it about the military that makes great leaders?
Hint: It's nurture, not nature.
As I sit back and think of my time in the Army, one of the many things that stands out is the professional development I received. When I left the service, the Army continued to encourage my development with the GI Bill to attend college—but when I joined the corporate world, my professional development ended. It seemed that there was this idea that leaders are born with the skills they need, that they aren’t something they need help to develop and nurture.?
My Drill Sergeant was my first exposure to coaching—and while that approach doesn’t match the model of professional coaching, the fundamental goals are the same: to produce effective behavior change through setting goals, creating outcomes, and managing personal change. The entire job of a Drill Sergeant is to ensure that you're armed with everything you need to be successful—to become a leader not only in your career but also be a better leader for yourself. It was probably one of the most empowering moments in my life, and I'm grateful for it.?
Investing in your people—REALLY, truly investing in their potential from day one, as I experienced in the Army—is the key to their success. And just as importantly, investing in your people in an equitable way, so that everyone has a fair shot, is the only true avenue to long-term success.
