From Bihar to the High Seas: Taki Imam’s Journey of Dedication and Expertise

Today, we share the story of Taki Imam, a Diesel Engine Supervisor who has been an integral part of our lifeboat services team for over two decades.

A Humble Beginning with Big Dreams

Born on 1st August 1973, in Bihar, Taki grew up in a family of farmers, the youngest of five brothers and two sisters As a child, while other kids were busy with studies, Taki found joy in practical work, - servicing and troubleshooting diesel engines on his family’s farm. Despite his father’s profession as a farmer, Taki’s heart was set on machinery, a passion that would eventually shape his entire career.

The Path to SHM Group

After completing his 10th standard, Taki pursued ITI in Air Conditioning in Kolkata. However, the opportunities in his field were scarce, so he returned to his first love—engines. A twist of fate brought him to Mumbai, where he worked as a technician in Mazagon Dock. It wasn’t long before he heard of a vacancy at SHM from his roommate. On December 26, 2000, Taki joined SHM’s Mumbai branch as a diesel engine lifeboat technician, marking the beginning of a journey that would span decades.

Overcoming Challenges with Resilience

Taki’s commitment to his work is evident in every task he undertakes. Under the guidance of seniors, he mastered the art of lifeboat diesel engines. In 2004, just days before his marriage, Taki faced a severe accident during a sea trial, resulting in a deep cut on his finger. SHM stood by him, covering all medical expenses. Remarkably, Taki was back on his feet and married soon after, a testament to his resilience. After marriage, many positive developments occurred in his life. “Like it is said in India, when Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) comes home, development happens,” he reflects on how marriage brought positive change to his life.

Dedication and Expertise

Taki’s work ethic is unparalleled. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, he continued his work, demonstrating his unwavering commitment. His expertise in troubleshooting diesel engines has made him an invaluable asset, particularly during sea trials, which he loves. His favourite task? Identifying problems in lifeboats and crafting a roadmap for solutions.

A Trusted Team Player

Taki’s dedication didn’t go unnoticed. His promotion to Diesel Engine Supervisor is a testament to his hard work and expertise. He has also been a part of special projects, including a complex electronic Fast Rescue Boat project for ONGC, where only selected team members were trusted for its servicing, and Taki was one of them. His journey at SHM has been supported by colleagues like Jafer Imam, Nitin Patil, Surendra Possum, and Suresh Borade, who have been with him since the beginning.

Family and Faith in SHM

Taki’s family, including his wife and three daughters, holds SHM in high regard. They believe that the company will always stand by them in difficult times, a belief that reflects the trust and loyalty Taki has built over the years. His daughters are in the 11th, 6th, and 2nd standards, and they are his pride and joy.

A Legacy of Passion and Skill

As he looks ahead to retirement in ten years, Taki dreams of returning to Bihar to start a service centre for motor vehicles, continuing his lifelong passion for engines. He hopes to be remembered for his work and expertise, especially his unique ability to fix any engine, even in the most challenging situations.
