From Awareness to Conversion: A Beginner's Guide to Understanding and Building Your Sales Funnel
Are you a start-up or small business owner who has come across the term "sales funnel" but aren't quite sure what it means? I work with a lot of clients who aren’t down with the business lingo (and in many cases, prefer it that way). BUT, they do want to set up effective processes that deliver the dollar.
A sales funnel is a step-by-step process that takes your potential customer from initial awareness of your product or service to making a purchase. The funnel is called a "funnel" because it narrows down the potential customers at each step, leaving you with only those who are most likely to buy.
The sales funnel process can be broken down into four main stages:
1. Awareness: The first stage of the sales funnel is creating awareness of your product or service. This is where you make potential customers aware that your business exists and what you have to offer. There are various ways to create awareness, such as social media advertising, content marketing, SEO, and PR.?
2. Interest: Once a potential customer is aware of your business, the next step is to generate interest in your product or service. This is where you provide more information about your offering, highlighting the features and benefits. You can do this through email marketing, lead magnets, webinars, and product demos.?
3. Decision: The third stage of the sales funnel is the decision stage, where potential customers decide whether or not to purchase from you. At this stage, it's important to remove any barriers to purchase and provide social proof, such as customer testimonials and reviews. You can also offer incentives, such as free trials or discounts, to encourage the purchase decision.?
4. Action: The final stage of the sales funnel is the action stage, where the potential customer becomes a paying customer. This is where you deliver your product or service and follow up with excellent customer service to retain the customer and encourage repeat business.?
Sales Funnel Example
Let's use the fictional small business "Sweet Treats Bakery" as an example.
1. Awareness Stage: Sweet Treats Bakery creates awareness of their business by posting on social media about their freshly baked cakes and pastries, running ads on Facebook and Instagram and handing out flyers in their local area.
2. Interest Stage: Interested potential customers who have seen Sweet Treats Bakery's ads or flyers visit their website and sign up for their email list to receive a free recipe book. This is Sweet Treats Bakery's lead magnet, which encourages potential customers to engage with their brand.?
3. Decision Stage: Sweet Treats Bakery sends targeted emails to their email list, showcasing their delicious cakes and pastries and providing testimonials from happy customers. They also offer a 10% discount for first-time customers to encourage the purchase decision.?
4. Action Stage: A potential customer decides to make a purchase and orders a dozen cupcakes for their upcoming birthday party. Sweet Treats Bakery delivers the cupcakes to the customer's door and follows up with excellent customer service, ensuring the cupcakes meet their expectations and offering a loyalty discount for future purchases.?
By implementing a sales funnel, Sweet Treats Bakery was able to create awareness of their business, generate interest in their products, remove barriers to purchase and follow up with excellent customer service to retain the customer and encourage repeat business.
So, now that you have a better understanding of what a sales funnel is, I hope you feel more confident about implementing one for your business. With this knowledge, you can start creating a sales funnel that works for you and watch as it helps you convert potential customers into paying ones!
