"From Audit Nights to Boardroom Lights: My 10-Year Journey from Rejections to Resilience – A Roadmap for Career Growth and Confidence!"
Today marks a significant milestone—10 years as a Chartered Accountant. Reflecting on this journey brings a mix of nostalgia, pride, and excitement for what lies ahead. My career has been a blend of late-night audits, corporate transitions, and personal growth. From overcoming early rejections to leading a finance function through an acquisition, my path has taught me invaluable lessons. For those feeling stuck, shy, or in need of a career boost, I hope my story serves as inspiration and a guide to navigating your own professional journey.
The Journey: From Auditor to Leading a Finance Function
My career began at Deloitte, where I spent years immersed in audit work, deciphering financial statements, and ensuring compliance. These early years were critical for building my technical foundation and understanding the importance of precision. However, I soon realized that my ambitions extended beyond the technicalities of finance—I wanted to see how finance could influence and drive business growth.
This realization led me to Tata Industries, where I made a significant shift from auditing to corporate finance. This transition was not just a change in job title but a move into a dynamic environment where finance plays a strategic role. I learned to apply my skills to broader business challenges and began to understand how finance integrates with various aspects of a large organization.
The most transformative experience came when I joined Browserstack. This role marked a pivotal moment in my career. At Browserstack, I saw firsthand how finance can be a catalyst for innovation and growth. The fast-paced, tech-driven environment was a departure from the structured corporate world, and it taught me about the importance of agility, teamwork, and strategic thinking in finance.
From Browserstack, I transitioned to Lockstep, taking on the challenge of leading the finance function. This role was a significant step up, and it culminated in Lockstep's acquisition by Sage. Leading a team through an acquisition was a defining moment in my career, requiring a blend of technical expertise, strategic insight, and leadership skills. The successful integration into Sage was a testament to the growth and resilience built over the years.
Overcoming Rejections and Building Resilience
My journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Early in my career, I faced multiple interview rejections that tested my confidence. These rejections were tough, but they also served as critical learning experiences. Each "no" pushed me to refine my skills and stay focused on my goals.
Looking back, I realize that those setbacks were crucial to my development. They taught me resilience and the importance of perseverance. If you’re facing rejections or feeling discouraged, remember that these challenges are opportunities for growth. Stay determined, and use these experiences to strengthen your resolve and improve your approach.
The Importance of Academics and Experience
Academics played a vital role in the early stages of my career. The knowledge and credentials I gained were essential for opening doors and establishing credibility. However, as my career progressed, I discovered that long-term success hinges more on experience, attitude, and a deep understanding of the business.
It’s not enough to excel in technical skills alone. To truly make an impact, you need to understand how finance supports and drives various business functions. Embrace opportunities to learn about different departments and how they contribute to overall business goals. This broader perspective will enhance your effectiveness and value as a finance professional.
Embracing Small Wins: Tea Breaks, Gossip, and Building Bonds
Throughout my career, small moments of joy and connection have been as important as major achievements. Tea breaks with colleagues, casual office gossip, and informal chats have provided valuable insights and built strong relationships. These interactions have helped me understand the business better and stay connected with my team.
Celebrating small wins and fostering personal connections can make the workplace more enjoyable and less isolating. These moments are opportunities to learn, share, and build a supportive network. They also provide a broader view of how different parts of the organization work together, enhancing your overall understanding and effectiveness.
Navigating Corporate Politics and Leading Teams
Corporate politics is an inevitable part of any career. Early on, I had to learn how to navigate office dynamics, align with different stakeholders, and manage competing interests while maintaining my values. These experiences taught me the importance of diplomacy, communication, and strategic thinking.
Leading a team through Lockstep's acquisition by Sage was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. It wasn’t just about managing finances—it was about leading people, building trust, and aligning the team with the company’s strategic goals. Seeing my team succeed and grow has been immensely fulfilling and underscores the value of strong leadership and effective team management.
Lifelong Learning: From Numbers to Strategy
In my role as Finance Controller at Sage, I continue to prioritize lifelong learning. While my early career focused on technical proficiency, I’ve come to realize that true success comes from understanding business strategy and how finance supports various aspects of the organization.
Staying curious and adaptable is crucial in today’s evolving business landscape. Whether it’s keeping up with technological advancements or understanding new regulatory frameworks, continuous learning is key to staying relevant and effective. Success in finance extends beyond technical skills; it involves applying that knowledge strategically to drive business outcomes.
The Role of LinkedIn in Career Growth
LinkedIn has been an essential tool in my career journey. Beyond being a platform for networking, it has served as a space for building connections, staying informed about industry trends, and exploring new opportunities. LinkedIn allows you to showcase your achievements, engage with industry leaders, and contribute to conversations that can enhance your professional visibility.
For those who may be shy or feel stuck in their current roles, LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for career growth. It offers a way to connect with peers, learn from others, and share your own experiences. Building a strong LinkedIn presence can help you establish your personal brand and open doors to new opportunities.
Advice to Future Chartered Accountants
To aspiring Chartered Accountants, my advice is this: Academics are crucial at the start, but long-term success depends on experience, attitude, and a deep understanding of business. Be resilient, stay focused, and remain open to learning and growth.
Celebrate the small wins, whether it’s a casual chat with a colleague or a new insight gained during a tea break. These moments will help you build connections and gain a broader understanding of the business. And if you encounter rejection, don’t be disheartened. Each setback is a step toward greater opportunities and success.
Looking Forward
As I reflect on this milestone, I am excited about the future. The finance world is constantly changing, and I am eager to embrace new challenges, continue learning, and grow both personally and professionally. I’m proud of the resilience and determination that have brought me to this point, and I look forward to the next chapter of my career.
