When I first developed the principles that eventually evolved into my book, The Creative Sandbox Way?, I never imagined they would end up in Silicon Valley boardrooms.
But here we are, and what a wild ride it’s been!
Picture this: Me, a former “non-creative person†and recovering perfectionist (I call myself an “intentional IMperfectionist), creating a framework to help artists and “creative wannabes†overcome creative blocks.
Fast forward a few years, and I’m using these same principles to help tech giants innovate on impossibly tight deadlines. Talk about creating the impossible!
So how did we get here?
It all started with my own creative journey.
After years of believing I wasn’t creative (sound familiar, anyone?), I finally reconnected with my inner artist. But it wasn’t smooth sailing.
Oh no. I faced creative blocks, perfectionism, and all the gremlins that come with putting yourself out there creatively.
That’s when?The Creative Sandbox Way??was born.
I developed these principles to help myself get past the blocks and into the flow. I quickly discovered that what worked for me, worked for other creatives. But little did I know, these same principles would also be exactly what tech leaders needed to drive innovation in their teams.
Honestly, it took me a while to see it, but I kept hearing from readers, and participants of my creativity workshops and retreats, who were creatives who also worked in tech, things like, “This is exactly what our dev team needs!â€
At first, I was skeptical. How could principles designed for individual creatives apply to large tech teams?
But as I started working with tech companies, to help them with things like communication and team development, I realized something profound: the challenges are the same, just on a different scale.
Take Creative Sandbox Way? guidepost number one: “There is no wrong.â€
For an artist, this might mean the blob that inadvertently came out of your pen.
For a tech team, it translates to creating a safe space for wild ideas and rapid prototyping.
The outcome? More innovative solutions and fewer missed opportunities due to fear of failure.
Or consider guidepost number two: “Think process, not product.â€
Artists use this to focus on the joy of creating rather than the pressure of the final piece.
In tech, it aligns beautifully with Agile methodologies, encouraging teams to value the learning process as much as the end product.
And let’s not forget guidepost number five: “Just start. Anywhere.â€
This principle helps artists overcome fear of the blank page, the paralysis of the blank canvas.
For tech teams, it’s a powerful antidote to analysis paralysis, encouraging action over endless planning.

What I’ve found most fascinating is how these principles, when applied in tech environments, create a sort of “strategic play.â€
It’s not about throwing structure out the window. Instead, it’s about creating space for creativity within the necessary frameworks of the tech world.
The result? Tech teams that are more adaptable, more innovative, and dare I say it, having more fun. And in today’s fast-paced tech landscape, that’s a competitive advantage you can’t afford to ignore.
So here I am, bringing the spirit of the art studio into the heart of tech hubs. It’s a journey I never expected, but one that’s shown me the universal power of creativity.
Whether you’re an artist facing a blank canvas or a tech leader tackling the next big innovation, the principles of?The Creative Sandbox Way??can help you Create the Impossible?.
Who knew that the path to tech innovation would lead through the creative sandbox? Not me, that’s for sure.
But I’m thrilled to be on this journey, helping leaders and teams tap into their creative potential and drive real change in the tech world.
So, the next time you’re facing a seemingly impossible challenge, remember: there is no wrong; think process, not product; and just start — anywhere. You might just surprise yourself with what you can create.
Now, who’s ready to play in the sandbox?
