From Art Director to Art Teacher: What I've Learned, So Far

Hey y’all,?
Yes, I’ve been on my usual hiatus from socials, but don’t worry—there’s always good reason behind it. These days, I’m in the classroom, teaching art to high school students. Adjusting to being on my feet for 8 hours a day, running Free Juice, and crafting lessons has kept me on my toes. But it’s been rewarding.?
Speaking of Free Juice, look out—our exhibition announcement was made today. More on that later, but for now, let’s dive into what I’ve learned on this unexpected new path. ?
A Year of Transformation
This time last year, I couldn’t have predicted that I’d be standing in front of a classroom full of young artists. Yet here I am, creating lesson plans on color theory, drawing, and even sculpture for high schoolers. Transitioning from Art Director to Art Teacher has been an unexpected journey, but it’s been exactly what I needed.?
What’s been most eye-opening is seeing art through the fresh perspectives of my students. I’m reminded daily of how small details—a thoughtful color choice, a creative risk—can transform not just art, but the way we view the world. And teaching has given me a deeper understanding of how children learn. The importance of meeting students where they are—supporting them in their growth—is something I fully appreciate in this opportunity. ?
I’ve also gained insight into the broader picture of education. My district offers flexibility that allows students to explore fields like floral design, woodwork, and business alongside art. More schools should offer this kind of flexibility and access to technology so young people can truly prepare for the future. I heard a great quote during a teacher’s conference: The fear of AI taking your job is not the issue. The real concern is someone who knows how to work with AI will take your job. That’s the kind of forward-thinking we need to instill in our students.
The Power of Intention
One of the most valuable lessons I teach my students is the power of intention. Before each class, we talk about the end goal of our time together. Whether we’re drawing or working on sculpture, we set a clear intention for the 57 minutes. It’s been incredible to watch them embrace this concept—and the results speak for themselves.?
Lessons Learned from My Students
I’m teaching nearly 200 students across grades 9-12, and every day brings a new lesson. Patience, consistency, and the importance of revisiting the basics have been key takeaways. And even more—my students remind me how essential it is to stay open to the smallest details. A single color shift, a creative choice, or even a quiet moment in art can shift perceptions. It’s not just about teaching—it’s about learning from them, too.
What I’ve Been Teaching
Right now, we’re diving into oil pastels, and it’s amazing to see the creativity unfold. I love putting a twist on traditional lessons—for example, during our color theory unit, I taught them about my journey, and how to create a mood board. They explored complementary colors, patterns, and placements, which helped them see how the right color decisions can elevate their work. Some of my students are already dreaming of careers in advertising and design. Watching them connect the dots between art and real-world industries is inspiring.

Why This Matters
Through teaching, I’ve found a deeper sense of purpose. It’s not just about imparting knowledge—it’s about inspiring the next generation of artists to discover their potential. It’s about giving them the tools to find their unique voices and carve their own paths. And as we gear up for the Free Juice University Graduation Exhibition, I’m reminded that teaching is just another way I can nurture and mentor the diverse, talented artists of tomorrow.
What’s Next?
With a week off, I’ve had time to catch up on all the amazing things that have been happening in the world of art since my last hiatus. We had an election, Lil Baby got his diploma, and the art (& tech) scene keeps growing—especially in places like Houston and New York. There’s so much to be excited about.?

Love,
