From Apprentice, To Interim Regional Director - Greg's Journey.

From Apprentice, To Interim Regional Director - Greg's Journey.

At Enerveo, we take pride in nurturing talent and providing opportunities for growth within the industry. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Greg McNally, who has had an incredible journey with us. Greg started his career as an apprentice and since joining us, has worked his way up to become the Interim Regional Director. Here’s what Greg had to share about his career and why he believes starting an apprenticeship in Highways Electrical is a fantastic opportunity.

Q: Greg, when did your journey in the electrical industry begin?

A: I started on a Youth Training Scheme at the age of 15. I did electrical contracting as an apprenticeship, joined a small electrical firm, and stayed with them until I was 20. I attended college on a day-release basis, got my qualifications, and became an approved electrician.

Q: How did your career progress from there?

A: I've been in street lighting for 24 years, working my way up and gaining qualifications like MEWP and G39. I transferred to SSE (as it was back then) in September 2010, where I started as a Team Manager. Over the years, I've taken on various roles including lighting, maintenance, construction, performance management, and operations management. I currently manage 36 people directly and oversee 120 staff across subcontractors and direct employees. This journey led me to my current position as Interim Regional Director.

Q: Why did you choose to work outdoors, specifically in street lighting?

A: Most people don't know much about it; everyone sees streetlights, but no one gives them much thought. Once you're in, you're part of a niche market. It's really interesting and despite being a repetitive role, it’s varied. You work in all weathers and have the freedom to manage your own workload.

Q: Can you tell us about the changes in street lighting work over the years?

A: Street lighting has evolved significantly. The standard of work is now compliant with modern regulations, and the innovations are fascinating. We can now control lighting remotely, dim lights, and monitor if they're on or off without physically checking each one. This is a huge shift from the past when we used to have someone driving around to spot issues.

Q: What are some career opportunities within street lighting?

A: There are various paths you can take. You can aspire to roles in live jointing, LED replacements, and more. LED replacements are particularly significant as they focus on sustainability and energy savings, which are major goals for councils.

Q: What are the risks and benefits of working in this field?

A: Working in street lighting can be high-risk. You need to be aware of heights and your surroundings. However, the benefits of an apprenticeship in this field are immense. You get both classroom learning and practical on-site experience. It's not just textbook learning—you gain hands-on experience, which makes the learning process faster and more effective.

Q: Have you mentored others in this field?

A: Yes, I've mentored several people. Watching their progression is rewarding. One mentee still works here as a Highways Electrical Worker and Jointer, having started as a pot washer in a kitchen- the best Apprentice I have ever had!

Q: Any advice for those entering the field?

A: Always ask questions and seek as much knowledge as you can from those around you. Learn from their experiences. Our team managers have over 100 years of combined service. Some have been here since school and are now in their 60s, with loads of experience.

Q: What does the future of street lighting look like?

A: Street lighting is always in demand. It's not going to disappear. There are opportunities to move around within the field, including roles in design and legislation. The industry is always evolving and there’s always something new to learn and adapt to.

Greg's story is a testament to the growth and opportunities available within the field of Highways Electrical. If you’re looking for a rewarding career with room to grow, consider starting an apprenticeship with us.
