From AI to VBC: 10 Must-Attend Sessions at BHT2024

From AI to VBC: 10 Must-Attend Sessions at BHT2024

As a clinical psychologist and digital health executive, I've seen firsthand the transformative power and potential of technology to address the mental health crisis. This year’s Behavioral Health Tech conference is set to be a melting pot of ideas, innovations, and insights that will no doubt shape the future of our field.

As we gear up for Arizona, I've put together a list of 10 panel sessions that are absolute must-attends. Each promises to tackle some of the most pressing issues in behavioral health, from leveraging responsible AI; to integrating diverse lived experiences into care; to forging innovative new partnerships and payment models; to increasing access; to innovating how, when, and where people receive care…and so much more.

Let's dive in.

Leading Change in Mental Health: Leveraging Lived Experience for Industry Transformation (November 5; 10:30 - 11:15 am)

One in five American adults live with mental illness. Learning from their lived experience can unleash powerful, patient-centered change across the mental healthcare ecosystem, from research to policy to service design and delivery. (It’s fair to say we need these changes now more than ever!) The panelists will share their personal journeys with mental health and how their experiences have shaped how they approach their professional roles. This discussion will offer invaluable insights for creating a more empathetic, effective, equitable, and accessible mental health care system.

Striking the Right Balance: Use Cases of Data-Driven Tech and Human Connection (November 5; 11:30 - 12:15 pm)

As someone deeply invested in the intersection of technology and mental health, I'm particularly excited about this panel. (OK, I’m also slightly biased because I’m speaking on it!) This session promises to explore the delicate balance between leveraging data-driven tech and maintaining the crucial human element in care delivery – no easy feat, but essential to do responsibly in order to achieve the best patient outcomes.

Engaging the SMI Community: Leveraging Community-Based Resources and Payor-Provider Partnerships (11/5 - 2:15 - 3:00 pm)

Patients with serious mental illness (SMI) suffer from some of the most debilitating psychiatric disorders and are some of the most expensive patients to treat. SMI affects about 6% of U.S. adults, yet nearly a third go untreated each year. For those who do receive care, the costs are staggering – an estimated $1.85 million per patient over a lifetime. This highlights the need for more accessible treatment options and the importance of reducing costs. This session will explore innovative ways to do both – at the community level and via payor-provider partnerships – to improve and lower the cost of care for this often underserved population.

Accelerating Measurement-Informed Care: Stakeholder Adoption (November 5; 2:15 -3:00 pm)

Measurement-informed care (MIC) is linked to a range of benefits in behavioral healthcare, including more personalized treatment; more informed, data-driven decision making; increased patient engagement; and improved outcomes. But much of the success of MIC hinges on patient trust and buy-in to the process. It’s natural for patients to want to know: How will you use my progress scores and question responses to adjust my treatment plan? Will my data be kept safe, and who else will have access to it besides my therapist? Will my answers affect my insurance coverage or access to care? In this session, I’ll be looking for practical ways to build patient trust in order to realize MIC's full potential.

Business Strategy Bootcamp for Clinicians in Digital Mental Health (November 5; 3:15 - 5:00 pm)

What clinician doesn’t love a good framework? This interactive workshop is a can’t-miss if you’re looking to navigate the business side of digital mental health and bridge the gap between clinical expertise and business acumen – a crucial skill set in our evolving field. Attendees will dive into the Ansoff Matrix (aka the Product/Market Expansion Grid), a two-by-two strategic framework used by business executives and marketers to identify, analyze, and plan growth opportunities. Whether you're just stepping into digital mental health or looking to amplify your impact, this bootcamp will equip you with the tools to drive smart, sustainable growth in our industry.

Addressing Provider Burnout: Strategies for a Healthier Workplace (November 5; 4:15 - 5:00 pm)

Heavy caseloads. Compassion fatigue. Endless admin work. It all leads to burnout – I know because I’ve been there (but that’s a story for another time…). But when we’re burned out, it’s tough to give our best to our patients. A 2023 SimplePractice survey found that more than half (52%) of therapists have experienced burnout, and more than two-thirds (67%) of burned-out practitioners reduced their caseloads as a result, hurting access to care. This session promises to offer new tools and techniques to help build a healthier, more sustainable practice – essential to keeping our workforce strong and delivering the quality care that patients deserve.

Breaking Barriers: Ensuring Equitable Access to Mental Health Treatment for All (November 6; 9:15 - 10:00 am)

Everyone deserves equal access to high-quality, affordable mental healthcare – regardless of race, gender, disability, sexuality, income, identity, or location. This panel will explore innovative approaches to better serve diverse communities while maintaining the highest standards of care. I’m looking to leave with actionable insights on improving access for underserved populations, learn about the latest technologies and strategies to make treatment more inclusive, and discover new ways to overcome systemic challenges that limit care for certain groups.

Looking for Your Insight Goldmine? Check the Qual. (November 6; 10:30 AM - 12:15 PM)

In the data-driven world of behavioral health tech, it's easy to overlook the power of qualitative insights. But qualitative data is invaluable because it helps us understand the "why" behind the “what.” It offers deep insights into patients’ lives and experiences, revealing the humans behind the data points, uncovering complexities, and contextualizing quantitative findings. What’s more, it unearths challenges and needs that numbers might miss and is particularly important for personalizing care. In this interactive workshop, I’m excited to dig into how, by humanizing data and capturing diverse perspectives, qualitative insights are driving innovative, patient-centered behavioral health approaches. This promises to be a fun one!

Value-Based Reimbursement: Innovating Payment Models for Better Mental Health Outcomes (November 6; 2:15 - 3:00 pm)

Physical healthcare is shifting away from fee-for-service to value-based care, rewarding outcomes over volume. Why, then, have mental and behavioral healthcare been so slow to follow? It begs the question: is value-based reimbursement in mental healthcare actually achievable? The benefits are clear – stronger alignment of mental and physical care, better patient outcomes, and lower costs. An Evernorth analysis showed that receiving behavioral outpatient care for a new diagnosis of anxiety, depression, or substance use disorder can cut medical costs by up to $3,321 per patient over 27 months. This session brings together a powerful lineup of leading industry executives, clinicians, and VCs who will let us into how they’re driving value-based care in behavioral health…and how we can work to do the same.

Ensuring Continuity of Care: Strategies for Seamless Patient Journeys (November 7; 9:45 - 10:30 am)

This session promises a deep dive into the macro impacts of integrated care, a topic close to my heart as we strive for more holistic patient care. The panelists will explore the historical divide between physical and behavioral health and share real-world examples of how various stakeholders – from telehealth providers to payers and policy institutes – are working to bridge that gap. We'll hear real-world success stories of integration and get a grasp on how social determinants of health complicate this picture. This is a must-attend for anyone interested in the intersection of technology and holistic, patient-centered care.

These sessions represent a fraction of the wealth of knowledge and insights that #BHT2024 will offer. I’m looking forward to engaging discussions, new connections, and fresh perspectives that will shape the future of behavioral health.

If you’ll be at #BHT2024, let me know in the comments.?? My team and I would love to connect with you. See you in Arizona!
