?? From AI Debates to TVET Digital Transformations: My Journey from 29 August – 27 September, 2024 ??

This past month has been an exciting chapter in my exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its transformative power in education, particularly within Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The insights I gained and the strategies we developed will play a critical role in future-proofing educational institutions in this increasingly digital world.

?? 1? Masterclass at OR Tambo: "AI – A Threat or Asset?"

The journey began with a masterclass at OR Tambo, addressing the pressing question: Is AI a threat or an asset to education? Is AI a friend or foe? We explored both sides of the argument. On the one hand, there were legitimate concerns about data privacy, AI ethics, and job displacement. On the other hand, I showcased the transformative potential of AI in curriculum development, personalized learning, and administrative efficiency. The highlight was the co-creation of a draft AI policy framework for educational institutions—one that ensures AI can be integrated safely and ethically, allowing schools to innovate while maintaining security

.

?? 2? VUT Keynote: AI-Powered Online Professional Learning Communities

At the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Teaching and Learning Conference, I had the privilege of being a keynote speaker, alongside Prof. Moeketsi, on the subject of sustainable education. My presentation, however, focused on AI-powered Online Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

In this keynote, I delved into how AI is transforming professional development by facilitating Online PLCs. These AI-driven communities create personalized learning environments where educators can share resources, receive tailored training, and collaborate virtually. With the support of adaptive learning systems, AI enables educators to engage in continuous professional development that meets their specific needs—helping them better address the diverse needs of their students . The response from the audience confirmed the growing interest in using AI to reshape professional learning in a dynamic, accessible, and data-informed manner.

?? 3? Stellenbosch ICTVET Conference: Digitalizing TVET Colleges

My journey culminated at the Stellenbosch ICTVET Conference, where I presented a strategic blueprint for digital transformation in TVET colleges. As the global job market rapidly evolves, it's critical for TVET institutions to adopt AI-enhanced learning systems and digital tools to stay relevant.

?

I emphasized the use of virtual simulations for hands-on technical subjects, real-time feedback for student assessments, and blended learning models to increase access—particularly for students in underserved areas. This event allowed me to reconnect with former students and colleagues, as we explored how these innovations can drive more accessible, equitable education .

?? The Road Ahead: Embracing AI for Future-Proof Education Reflecting on these events, it’s clear that AI is already shaping the future of education. From OR Tambo’s policy discussions to the AI-powered Online PLCs at VUT, to the digital transformation of TVET at Stellenbosch—the potential of AI to transform professional learning and TVET education is immense.

The journey ahead requires continued collaboration with educators, policymakers, and technology leaders to ensure AI is integrated in ways that enhance both efficiency and equity.

?? Let’s connect! I’d love to hear your thoughts on how we can further innovate AI in education. Reach out and share your ideas!
